Just an observation as recently was driving past some youths clearly going to such an event......as a guy (and this applied to when I was at school too)
I think girls/women often don't look at their most attractive, when going to formal events.

Hours of preparation, alot of money spent. Yet, I think often the same girl/ woman, looks more attractive in a less formal clothes and even in the school girls case their school uniform. Other guys, agree or disagree?

Heh, the girl I took to prom my senior year looks way hotter in a super tight tank top and short shorts. But she still looked very pretty in her prom dress and I think that's the point... you're not trying to look like a stripper, you're trying to look visually appealing.

Compare a photo from Playboy to a fine painting (Monet or Van Gogh? I don't know my painters very well). Both are nice to look at but for different reasons.

Same here- not for a lack of someone to go with, but for a lack of knowing how to dance! I was too damn shy and awkward dancing and it was not like I could knock back a few drinks first to loosen up! (legally anyways)

Same. Didn't go to junior year homecoming or senior prom. Mainly bc I was a loner and I changed HSs in 11th grade.

I agree. Girls get their hair done the day of the prom. It usually looks like a bird's nest all piled on top of their head. I don't understand why they don't wear it the way they usually do everyday. They would look much nicer. I have also seen too many girls wearing prom dresses that don't flatter them. Many of these girls would be better spending money on a gym membership, but instead spend it on having their nails done, tanning, professional makeup, the bird's nest hairdos and the limo.

I completely agree, and I've thought about this many times in the past. It seems to many women that formal = way too much makeup, hair piled on top or on the back of the head, and dresses that are either slutty or just over-the-top. There's something to be said for classy, conservative style, IMO.

I liked how my date looked at the prom.
Sure she looked hotter in another outfit, but she looked pretty nice in her dress and hairdo

I looked great for prom. Boyfriend agreed and married me years later

Seriously though, I looked good. That was over 10 years ago and I still think so and I'm fairly self-critical (especially in pictures).

Prom dresses today, however, are hideous. I'm maid of honor in a wedding and I see these dresses all over the place. They're obnoxious. These girls are going to look at pictures of themselves someday and go, "OMG what was I thinking? Lime green poofy dress, with all sorts of cleavage, and a bazillion sparkly crystals.... yuck!"
