Women absolutely can be intimidating. Some men just don't want to admit it because their insecurity makes them believe that their masculinity only exists in relation to their dominance over women.
My mother was intimidating as hell. She didn't care what people thought about her. She was reserved and held back her judgment so you never really knew where you stood with her.
I've had teachers who were intimidating, and it had nothing to do with an "approach" or lack of communication. You can work with someone every day and still find them intimidating because you never feel
quite comfortable around them.
And FYI if someone is "balling up like a hedgehog" around you, there are other problems at work LOL.
