And Fleetiebelle's point is that what you are describing is different from being "intimidating."

Women absolutely can be intimidating. Some men just don't want to admit it because their insecurity makes them believe that their masculinity only exists in relation to their dominance over women.

My mother was intimidating as hell. She didn't care what people thought about her. She was reserved and held back her judgment so you never really knew where you stood with her.

I've had teachers who were intimidating, and it had nothing to do with an "approach" or lack of communication. You can work with someone every day and still find them intimidating because you never feel quite comfortable around them.

And FYI if someone is "balling up like a hedgehog" around you, there are other problems at work LOL.

Yes, pretty much the only way you can feel intimidated by someone is if you feel inferior to them.

Otherwise, it would be some other negative feeling (if you don't, in fact, actually like them); disregard, annoyance, distaste, disgust, horror, etc. lol

In most cases and likely the op, men are not talking about an intimidating powerful figure. Most women are not intimidating figures by any means. Not to say they don’t exist. There’s a couple in my company. But they aren’t common.

What the men the op are really saying is they have a massive fear of rejection. They get a feeling of anxiety around even moderately attractive women in potential situations of social interaction and mistakenly identify that emotion as intimidation.
