I recommend google voice. It can route to your real phone. You can text from the web. And block the annoying people as needed. And it is free.
No, I usually just communicate by e-mail until I feel comfortable enough to give the person my number. But usually, we just communicate by e-mail.
I do, however, have more than one email because one is "professional" and it is my full name and the other is recreational (being the one I do give out).
I never used an alternate number, but then I never really needed to. We only exchanged numbers on the day that we had arranged to meet, so it was purely for "as needed" purposes.
That said, having an alternative number specifically for the purposes of online dating is a really good idea.
