For those of you who are or who have been married or in a very long term live together relationship, did you feel like the relationship was a sacrifice?

I think we have to make sacrifices, but I don't feel the relationship itself is a sacrifice. The relationship itself is the most rewarding accomplishment in my life. I make sacrifices when needed in order to keep it healthy and happy.

Sacrifices were made on both ends, and that's par for the course.

The nature of nature is compromise.

Speed/power trade off.

Complexity/ease of use trade off.

These are engineering principals, but they still apply.

It's a fundamental law of the universe, something is always gained and something lost....

My first marriage had sacrifices but not in a negative way...they were sensible choices. They were things that each of us wanted to, let go of, in order to come together.

My second marriage had "negative" sacrifices. Choices that were made under duress, and tension, and were not choices that were the best for us in the long run. Some of the things that we chose to let go of for the betterment of this relationship is some of the same things that seemed to drive us apart.

Good food for thought! Thank you Molli

Hmmm, I guess I don't feel like I make all that many sacrifices in my marriage, or I just don't view everyday events as a sacrifice.

When there are children involved then, yes, there were lots of sacrifices made.

A better word used would be "compromises" being made. We all can't have everything we want, and sometimes our partner wants something we don't want. We compromise so that both partners are treated equally.

Now, kids... totally different ball game. I have made more sacrifices in the past few years since having a kid than I ever thought or imagined I would. But, those decisions were for the betterment of the family as a whole, and I have no regrets.
