There are several threads on this issue, but since I haven't participated in any of them, I'll throw in my two cents here. I have a very unusual maiden name, which I love, so I kept it as my middle name. My husband and I also gave our youngest child the same middle name. It's not uncommon in our family to do so. Both my husband and I have many female ancestors who did the same.
My maiden name is very ethnically telling (I don't know how else to put it lol), and it's not Rodrigues or Suarez. It's unique and it goes well with my other names. My first name is very plainly generic, so I enjoy the distinction. However, when I get married, I want to hyphenate my name. Tack his on at the end, just because I want to have the same name as everyone else in my household.
I don't want to have children with different surnames as me. But I want to be able to use my maiden name, too So, best of both worlds.
Were my maiden and husband's names put together into a hyphenate, it would be needlessly long and unweildy, esp with my first and middle. I don't need a name with eleven syllables.
