It's utterly fascinating to see these kinds of threads, where the OP never replies back after asking for 'advice,' evolve into its own thread with multiple participants bantering with each other.

You pretty much described just about every thread. The first few posts are typically the ones that answer the OP, after that too many side issues pop up and people go off on tangents.

If you think this is bad, try heading over to the politics sub-forum.

There a handful of regulars over in that forum that are just complete and unadulterated douchbags of the highest order. Not naming names, just saying.

I've gone round and round with a few and usually have to just go away for fear of getting infractions. I don't have any problem with a slightly heated discourse but some of those people are really really mean spirited and just love to fight with people.

I don't really get it. It seems like it's just walking around in the woods and on mountains.

Am I missing something?

This is not meant to be sarcastic. I'm genuinely curious.
"Craze"? The Sierra Club was founded pver 100 years ago by hiking enthusiasts who wanted to enjoy the natural beauty of regional and national parks. It's a great way to get exercise and enjoy fresh air and natural beauty. It's a pretty long-lived and ubiquitous "craze", if you're going to call it that.

Why? How do you get your cardio exercise--racing hard to go nowhere fast on a stationary bike at the gym, or on a treadmill? BWAhahahaha!

Just looked into this. Surprisingly, nothing in my area (Phoenix). I joined some hiking Meetup groups.

Do you know of any big hiking organizations?

Nope. I don't do any cardio. Just weight lifting.

Ah, you must be young. The good ol' days of just pumping iron to stay fit. LOL, I need cardio to get this flab down.

I'm still in my 20s (well for the next 9 or so months).

The flab is starting to pick up, but it's not concerning just yet. Also, I just got out of the military after 4 years. So I'm enjoying life without cardio for a little while.

I know Tucson has hiking groups, so Phx must, too. Tucson hikers go up in the mountains outside of town. Here in Santa Fe, we have hiking trails around the edges of town where there are parks, Nature Conservancy land, the Audubon Center, and the national forest. Does Google not turn up the name of a hiking org in your area? Ah, here you go: the Trailblazers. http://www.azhikers.org/

Summer isn't really conducive here in the SW, if you ask me--too hot. But late spring and fall are very nice for that. Where I live, people like to go up around the ski basin, the higher elevations, to see the fall foliage.
