When I was 22 and working at the hospital, one of the male nurses started telling us about how he used to work on the barges on the Mississippi River--he said sometimes women went along as cooks and I wanted to do that really bad--the pay is good and you work 1 month on and 1 month off. It's just as well I never did it though--the men can be pretty rough and I was a young lady then. Now I'm an old lady so maybe it's time to revive my dream.
I have a friend that is a Captain, he tried to get me to cook on his boat, but I cant leave my critters for 30 days at a time.
My girlfriend's (now wife's) uncle ran a fishing pier at the beach. He got me a job helping the tourist's bait their hooks. Since I was new he made me an apprentice baiter.
The next summer, I took on more responsibilities, actually stting things up, curring bait, packaging it, etc...Paid more money. So I was the Baiter.
Third year. Ran the store, bought supplies, ran the other kids...I was named the Master...
Really...Wanted to be professional athlete...Football. Came out of high school, got several offers from Division 1 (small schools) and actually got appointment to US Military Academy (mostly for Football (but had good grades)). Declined. Went through University. Became an Engineer...Not exciting but has allowed me to travel through out the world and make a good living...
