Yes. I used this tactic even as a teenager, probably as a self defense mechanism. My first love broke up with me quite unexpectedly, after that I knew the signs and always ended things first.

My daughter never has been able to do this and it has pained me to see her clinging to relationships that are clearly coming to an end, knowing it was just a matter of time before she got dumped and she would be caught totally unaware.
