I have no idea if there ever was a "first thing".

I have too much pleasure enjoying my life to even think about things like that.

What difference would it make on how you live your life today?

Would anyone be a better person if they knew exactly how things started ?

The christian tells you how and why things got started.

The atheist doesn't care.

Who is the better person to know and care for?

RESPONSE:

I am not an atheist. However, there are two possible answers to your question.

The first is matter and energy (see Aristotle). [Most likely quarks]

The second is God.

Please note, that the"first thing to exist ever" would have always existed. Otherwise, we'd have something springing in to existence from nothing.

Big bang theory - Evidence: expanding universe

Allah did it - Evidence: 1600 year old goat herder mumblings

Observations

Telescope, scientific measurements and calculations show expanding universe, lots of pretty pictures from the Hubble space telescope, radio telescopes data to images, accurate aging of moon rocks, billions of years in the making etc.

Superstition, lack of use of intellect, belief in archaic non scientific mumblings of dead illiterate prophet, holding onto ancient culture not really known for science acumen, all happened in 6 literal days etc.

How planets are formed How stars are formed

What???!! God didn't create matter and energy???
(I'm going to bet that you'll find some here that will disagree heartily with you on this)

I am an atheist, and I don't know, but I will posit that you don't know either.

But, I do have a guess. I think that the multiverse (note I did not say universe) just "is" and does not lie on our universe's time continuum.
