But what of those religions that do not have concrete ideas of the afterlife, or ideas that differ greatly from those found in Christianity?

On a personal note I do not look on my religion as a means to have God(swt) serve me but as a means for me to show my desire to serve God(swt).

The appeal I find is it gives me a visible means to express love of God(swt). That is all I need.

Jesus said in Matt. 7:[21] Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Also in Luke 6:[46] And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
And in Mark 3:[35] For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.
Heb. 10:[36] For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise.

Jesus said very clearly, in the sermon on the mount, that we should love our enemies. I found it out of line with this for me to go into battle, claiming to love my enemies at the same time my intent was to shoot and kill them. Thus almost 60 years ago I registered as a conscientious objector with Selective Service. I was never called into duty, but felt good that I had made my mind up as to how I would have served if I had been drafted.

I believe the appeal mostly lies in some sense of purpose to our lives and meaning in the Universe. I am not a great believer in security. The idea of meaning in the Universe usually depends on meaning to the individual human. I think religion is but one step in humanity's quest for truth. Eventually it will give way as it has been gradually giving way to the truths discovered by science. Personally, I don't think it really matters whether or not there is some meaning to the Universe. I just like being part of it and being able to learn what I can of it.

I believe that if we ever come to the conclusion that there is a God, He requires us to diligently seek to know and DO His will while we are here.

There is no appeal , only the fear of eternal torment . If there was no threat of hell in this life or the next alot of people wouldn't bother, and the ones who did would be the true believers , because they aren't being forced or threaten

Well...there's one very narrow view. LOL. The fear of eternal torment? Sounds like one of those old fire-and-brimstone cults to me!

Yet they are still around in the bible belt using fear to get people to believe in God. Useing the bad things that the news media tends to focus on to say God is coming.

Stay home don't get out because the world is evil & will drag you down with it. Look for God at ANY given moment because the end is near! That is too sad you were taught all that garbage as if it were "Christian."

My web site at Saviour of all Fellowship, universal reconciliation, salvation of all mankind shows a loving God who currently is not reckoning our offenses to us and is at peace with all mankind. He will eventually save all mankind (The Bible says so). reed067, I don't blame you for your reaction to such a fiendish god portrayed to you. You did the right thing to get out of that balogna. I wouldn't want to worship such a fiend either.
