Does God control everything? Or can some things happen without God?
Are there some things God cannot do? Like turn off gravity? Or can he do pretty much anything?
God is spirit and God is everywhere. He is not some old man with grey hair and grey beard. Since He is everywhere, why couldn't He "do His will in the army of the heavens and with those dwelling on the earth"?
God as normally constituted by the Abrahamic faiths CAN do anything (omnipotence combined with omniscience). As Mr5150 points out, he clearly doesn't do things just because he can, and seems content to let an awful lot just run its course. On the other hand the Bible and other holy books seems to promise that he can be influenced to do things on behalf of his people. Details are muddy, as per usual, though. Such that they can be dismissed / embraced at will.
I am put in mind of an old joke: a guy stands before a church altar, in the throes of conviction of his sinful nature. Two elders stand on either side of him. "Hold on!!" advises one. "Let go!!" says the other.
I remember the story of Noah's Flood from Sunday School. God kills everything on earth, except for those in the ark.
What's to stop God from doing something like that again? If he's all-powerful, couldn't he turn off Gravity? Think about what would happen. Within seconds, atmospheric pressure would drop to zero and we would all be dead. Among other things.
...couldn't he turn off Gravity? Think about what would happen. ....
Sorry, but, no thank you.
Why would anyone want to spend their valuable thought time to imagine that?
I see it as a waste of my thoughts and inner contented experience....sorry, maybe
I shouldn't have said that ... but expressing it points out the value to our inner world...
and I do give it great value.
Now think about a nail in your eye? See what I mean? Why?
Is there really evidence for such an immanent threat to the earth and all of its inhabitants? Or is this danger completely imaginary?
