Massive decline in enrollment is the reason.

Oldest US graduate seminary to close campus - Religion News Service

From the article:
"Since 2005, enrollment at mainline Protestant seminaries has fallen by nearly 24 percent, he said, and denominational decline has been a driving factor."

It goes on to say:
"...now part-time pastorates are increasingly the norm as congregations with dwindling numbers can’t afford full-timers. Fewer would-be pastors want to incur five-figure student loan debt in exchange for a part-time job. So they don’t enroll."
So, the decline in church membership now is affecting intake of the oldest seminary in the USA. All the talk about church plantings and growing numbers at megachurches aside, this is just another nail in the coffin of mainstream Christian religion in America.

And the reaction from the fundies?

They get more and more vociferous. They think they are "winning"... sort of like Charlie Sheen. And his denials got him HIV.

I would have considered this a win when I was still a fundamentalist. To my church, the mainline churches were borderline apostates. Their decline meant that God was punishing them for their liberal views.

I don't know what other fundamentalist churches might think.

Think about this logically. All the bigoted *******s are joining the megachurches.

The capacity of a megachurch is much higher.

Therefore, less churches are needed.

More pastors should be trained, but we have too many crazed "Christians" joining these big churches. The megachurches tend not to be real churches. Mainstream churches tend to be "smaller class size" so to speak, but unfortunately, there aren't enough of these churches being built or staffed, because to most of today's pastors living in the country is beneath them. Nevermind that it doesn't matter where you live because online shopping gets you most things.

Are the rise of mega churches a good thing?

Not really. Not even from the perspective of an atheist.

It means a bunch of twits are deciding to affiliate with an organization of even bigger twits, rather than getting a grip and seeing the larger world out there. Liberal Christians are far more likely to leave atheists alone. So really, the megachurch is a threat both to Christianity and to atheism (mass religion like many other mass culture, draws the lowest common denominator, and the last thing you need is wrong-headed religion teaching people to be bigger rednecks than they already are).

Its good to see these seminaries of false religions close their doors , as they teach a false Christ which is watered down , and the gospel would not reached by the people who went there .....Where once they had the truth of Christ , where they liberalized it by the freedom not to believe that Jesus could not bring His power of redemption to the graduate of these seminaries ....... And No real power of Christ then No Work from Jesus needed , as Jesus requires people believe in Him ...............Still there are other Apostolic groups teaching New Pastors the truth which They will flourish with the Power of Jesus Christ

I'm sure you atheists will be happy when all the Christian churches are supplanted with mosques. Then the Islamists will not feel the least bit of remorse when they take out all the unbelievers including the atheists. Then we'll see how much you snicker.

What's your point? Do you have a point?

Do you have a question? Are you looking to argue for or against anything?
