Someone left the lights on!

The latest Gallup pole shows that 24 % of Americans believe the Bible is to be taken as the literal word of God and 26 % believe it is a collection of stories and fables. 47% believe it to be inspired by God.

Interesting points:

Although biblical literalism now ties with biblical skepticism nationally, these views vary somewhat across different segments of the U.S. population.

Nonwhites, adults aged 50 and older, and adults with no college education all lean toward believing the Bible is the actual word of God rather than stories and history recorded by man.

Men, whites, adults aged 18 to 29 as well as those aged 30 to 49, and college graduates lean in the other direction, with more being skeptics than literalists. Still, in all of these groups, the largest segment takes the middle position, believing the Bible reflects the inspired word of God.

Well, that's not discouraging, exactly, but back in the early days, the response to the strings of Bible errors was as much "It isn't the Literal word of God, but the inspired word..." as much as Bible -literalist denial. Still waiting for the Tsunami of doubt...and it's a long time coming....

It amazes me that the country that won the space race is still so spiritually backward.

Funny how to so called college people don`t believe is probably because of the liberal teachers in those schools think they know everything ...... I went to college and got the honor plus the dean reward top of the class, , were now I am a Christian and child of God , who believes the bible .....

fear drove that race. And when we became less afraid we stopped going ... wow, just wow. I really wanted a vacation on the moon too. 2017 and I am no closer to that then I was in 1982.

At school I was top of the religious instruction class. And I was an atheist and remained one.

From what I have seen of your posts, your continued Faith depends on placing Faith above reason and evidence. Which is the reason that Bible -literalism fails to stand up and so many believers have to adulterate their Faith with a bit of reasoning. Not everybody is capable of holding fast to Faith -based denial as you do.

If checking the top of-the -class brain of yours a the Church door is what pleases God, you are assured at a place a God's table. That's if you got the right God, of course.

You are 1/2 right. College professors are just people and their is no need to take what they say literally. Go find out for yourself. My college philosophy professors hated me. I used to say "great idea ... what world do you live in?". they are as bad as religious people with their nonsense.

That being said. When we talk about a guy dying, waking up, and flying away even a child like liberal can see how silly that is. So I am wondering why you can't?

Can you separate what is going on around you from what other people tell you about god? God does not have to be that thing they describe in the bible. Saying that does not mean you have it all wrong either. You can use your commonsense.

Drop the magic, insert what you know, and keep your faith. Their is no need for blind faith. In fact, I wouldn't trust anybody that doesn't help you see using what you know. I would trust them less when they say it must be this way or you go to hell.

Funny how I went to school, studied religions, and still had conservative instructors who thought they knew everything and I was a 3.89 GPA undergrad and dean list every semester for 4.5 years (missed the second semester junior year when I had 21 credit load and just a 3,0 GPA...) and now I am a child of God who KNOWS the bible was written by MEN, for MEN and ONLY from a PATRIARCHAL point of view and believes GOD has been manipulated and made to MAN's image of who God should be...

That's a pretty sound reailisation, I'd say and it puts you on the Skeptical side rather than literalist, even if you are still a God -believer rather than 'Agnostic, and might put "Christian" rather than "None".

Howsumever, I'd say you are open to doubt and question, and we could (if it came to it) do business. There are others as you are probably aware, who have their fingers in their ears and respond to posts only to give pretexts for keeping their fingers in their ears.

Well, we won the space race to prove that Jesus and Capitalism are superior to Godless Communism, remember?
