I was reading an article about the top ten baby names and I was reminded that many people's names in America are taken from the Bible. The top ten list for men is:

1. Jacob

2. Michael

3. Ethan

4. Joshua

5. Daniel

6. Christopher

7. Anthony

8. William

9. Matthew

10. Andrew

This got me wondering why no one ever really names their child "Jesus". I know in some South American countries that people name their kids "Jesus" but rarely is it a name you come across here in North America. I knew a couple of Elijah's in school as well as a Noah. I never did meet a Cain or Abel though. Any ideas? I just think it's strange that of all the people in the Bible, and certainly the most popular figure, that Jesus is a name that many people don't name their children.

It's just something you don't do. An unspoken rule that doesn't need any explanation. Well, okay, apparently it does.

It's out of respect and reverence. There's only ONE Jesus.

And I knew someone growing up named Cain. Why they would name their child this I have no idea. Not one of the great Biblical characters IMO.

I've also known a couple of people from Mexico named Jesus which is pronounced something like Heysus. I think the reason we don't see that is because naming your child Jesus in our culture would probably result in alot of taunting from other children growing up and it's just never been established as an acceptable name for a boy. People are used to it in Latin America and it's nothing unusual but in America it would just seem like a weird thing to do.

Plus, life is though and there are a lot of frustrated people. Imagine how many heads would turn when someone exclaims "Jesus". I think that is also why not many are named Buddha or Allah either - but I have seen some Krishnas and Ramas.

Same reason we don't name our kids 'God'.

Of course I am sure there are some out there who break some of these rules....Good thing George Foreman isn't 'Jesus' Foreman.

Also, you might be interested in knowing, Jesus is the Greek for 'Joshua', and I know you've heard that name before.

Now I'm disappointed.... my name's not on the list and I was named after a book of the bible ... LOL ... j/k. Actually, in my family all us kids were named for folks in the bible. Now, one name that is in the bible that I didn't think I'd ever come across I have ... Dorcas. I work with her.

As the other said... there are "Heysus" in spanish/hispanic cultures and there are plenty of Joshuas in the world, which is how Jesus' name is pronounced in Hebrew. However, just naming your kid "Jesus" in english is not really done, for the obvious reasons stated. It would seem bad taste to me.

But I really don't know if it is "wrong" or not. I don't think Jesus the Christ would look upon those who share his name any differently than he looks upon the rest of us. Probably their parents thought they were honoring Him or had really high expectations of their kids.

There are Muslims from so-called Jesus, and there are so-called

Mohammed, Noah, Adam. We Muslims often call these names,

because they are human beings like us, and we are poisoning their

names, but God distinguishes them as prophets and miracles are

not as many ordinary people ......
