THere is a website, Now bear with me on this one
I think it was here, Welcome To The Deism Site!
But I cannot find it
It went something like this
You may be a deist/Agnostic/Aetheist if you know more about the Bible than most right wing Christians.

Now that is an interesting question, and brings to heart one issue of why I left Christianity,
WhenI was involved those churches (actually many of them) I asked often
Where did this Bible Come from (I had doubts from the beginning as to it's godly origins.
No one was ever able to answer that. One of the long laundry list of questions that Christianity cannot answer

I spent years then researching on my own where the Bible started where it evolved and maybe that is why I DON'T believe in it, and I think that seriously, if many deists, agnostics and aetheists have done the same research I have, and I think they have, then I think I understand WHY they too do not believe in it.

Here was what I was told by Christian teachers, clergy, followers &propogandists
God Wrote It God Told Men How to Write IT God Breathed It God Inspired all of it
It is the COmplete and Final Word of God It is all we need

But it goes non
I was told point blank that I was treading on "Forbidden knowledge" by seeking the origins of the Bible
(I was told that about Darwin too)
I was given a book called How we got the Bible Which basically was propaganda telling how God called people togther and told them how to write and assemble it) Interesting, because it did not mention any motives of any Roman leadership or any desire of Unity in a fledgling splintered cult)
The Book was about as well written with about as much convincing rhetoric as Michael Harrington's 1980's propaganda (Sorry if I offend the socialists out there, all three or four of you)

Things such as that only forced me to look deeper, which again, I was told not to, and as a result I find out the political and scoioculture issues of the time (Which are not taught in religions) and also I find out who reallywrote what and when and how they wrote it and why and such
Now years later, I say see I was write The Bible is not hsitorically accurate, The Bible IS just myth and this all proves it......

Anyone else done this, looked at the origins of the Bible and in doing so found proof of it only as myth and allegory? Is that perhaps why people become aetheists after they see how and where the Bible started, after who and why The mythology evolved as it did ?

Nice evaluation. Now why not you challenge yourself and look into the Quran, i dare you, and see if you can find the same kind of inconsistencies that you find in the bible, the interfering hands of humans etc. You won't find any, i'm very confident. In fact, you will be pleasantly surprised if you really did search out the Quran in a systematic and non-biased manner

Let me ask ...

Is it not true that every book written by man can be explained by man? Of course it is... and to think other wise would be a fools trap. Man has a finite understanding of the world around him... and therefore can only speak to what he already knows or perhaps the "next" logical assumption built upon the other. Each book is only as inspired as the skill of writer and the intellectual limits he or she possesses. We can not write that which we can not think. Duh...

So I offer a different view of the Bible, at this point. The view is... the Bible in all it's seemingly contrived contradictions, all it's imperfection.... does not exist within the text, but rather, in the readers limited intellect, confined to our understanding. Some will argue that theology offers explanations... and yes I would agree, but if all could be explained by man perfectly and factually , it must be of man... and therefore inspired by a finite intellect.

Lets look at integers. Numbers are infinite... and isn't it true that "formula's" are still being discovered? and proved or disproved? have we reached a point in mathematics that we can say "we understand it all"? Do we now, with our revelation in math, go back and re- discover what we thought was "correct", is actually "incorrect"? Happens all the time... and is that bad? of course not... it is knowledge and understanding growing through revelation... and eliminating presumptions.

Therefore I submit that anything infinite can not be completely understood, completely explained, or contained by our intellect ... and if it is, it's mans handiwork. I do agree that 2+2=4 and that I am sure of... and therefore truth... and it can be known. However that leaves us in a place where we must travel.... and each of us has 2 choices... and are very closely related and very far removed.... presumption or faith.

............just one man's opinion.... guess which one I picked?

It's a shame that apparently you only listened to sources skewed against it.

not sure what that means. I'm working on my Master's in Theology and I've never been told the Bible's origins are "forbidden". In fact, my hermenuetics class that I'm in right now has a pretty good chunk of material devoted to it.

What purpose would it serve the Roman government to put together a book that would cause division and undermine their rule?

I would tend to disagree. But you have the right to be wrong...

I've looked at it, but I don't find myth and allegory.

I think the reason people become atheists is that they were never really true believers to begin with, and they bought into the anti-Bible propoganda.

No proof - just overwhelming evidence.

Perhaps. This realization can definitely at least sour one's opinion of religions.

That must be a short class. "Hi folks. Welcome to class. The lesson today is "God did it." Have a nice day, see you tomorrow."

This quote alone is enough to turn me away from the Quran:

"Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allah has given the one more (strength) than the other, and because they support them from their means. Therefore the righteous women are devoutly obedient, and guard in (the husband's) absence what Allah would have them guard. As to those women on whose part ye fear disloyalty and ill-conduct, admonish them (first), (Next), refuse to share their beds, (And last) beat them (lightly); but if they return to obedience, seek not against them Means (of annoyance): For Allah is Most High, great (above you all)"

Yeah, no thanks with the beatings and obedience. I'm not second-class or subservient to anyone.

I really have to remember to rep you for this.

I agree that many atheists, agnostics, etc. know more about the Bible than many Christians. I also think that they don't take things on heresay; they don't believe it is God's word just because it says so. I know alot about the Bible because I spent many years after leaving Christianity reading things about it and finding scriptures that bothered me; asking a lot of questions, etc. I know so much that I could never be a Christian again or even believe in the Old Testament. I also know enough to realize that you can't change people's minds about their beliefs until they are ready, which may be never.

So, yes I have read of the origens; I have also compared what Buddha had said to what Christ was supposed to have said 500 years later. And what Buddha said was said by the Hindus earlier but with added stuff.

And I still read things. For example I am going to one day watch the movie, The Case For Christ, but I know it won't sway me. Anyway, it is in my Netflix Q. And I am also reading a book titled, Why God Won't Go Away. But I don't believe that the Bible is the word of God even though many had some wisdom, and even the Quran has wisdom.
