Does anyone here possess the ability to speak in tongues? Can the sounds be translated into English? Which religious sects encourage speaking in tongues?

Ah...another one of those controversies within the churches!

I do not speak in tongues. Most of the denominations who do this are Pentecostal, Assemblies of God, Church of God and a few others who are "charasmatic" -- there are some Baptists who claim to be charasmatic, some Catholics and maybe others that I'm not as familiar with.

I can only quote what the Bible says about speaking in tongues in church:

1 Corinthians 14:27-29: If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at the most three, each in turn, and let one interpret. But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in the church, and let him speak to himself and to God. (NKJV)

I've never spoken in tongues during prayer or worship and never heard anyone else do it either. However, I have a recording of angels singing in a church in Florida (the most beautiful sounds you've ever heard) and the strange sounds I heard from the congregation - who have become aware of the angels having joined them in worship, is in tongues. I didn't understand a word.

I speak Hebrew - does that count??

But seriously, can I ask exactly what it means to "speak in tongues?" I know from the Hollywood interpretations, but never really understood what it means... is that to speak in a way nobody can understand, and/or through God? Just curious!

From what I understand, speaking in tongues is a gift of a different language that only God and an interpreter understand. Once someone receives the message, an interpreter usually relays the meaning out loud within a few minutes. I have mixed feelings on this. I've been in churches (pentecostal) where people just bubble with words I've never heard, yet there are no interpretations and I don't believe that is the way it's supposed to be. Just my opinion.

Hmmm... very interesting! I think the people you've encountered were trying to speak in tongues, which obviously defeats the purpose.

Exactly. I don't attend those churches anymore...I just didn't feel comfortable. I actually go to a non-denominational church, Calvary Chapel, and everything seems to be in accordance with the Bible; a priority to me.

I so wish we had a Calvary Chapel in our community! I absolutely love Bob Coy (Ft. Lauderdale) and have some of his books, a couple of CDs and get the monthly devotional. I'm glad you have one!

1 Corinthians 14:22-25 speaks of talking in tongues. The way the Corinthians were speaking in tongues was not helping anyone because believers did not understand what was being said and unbelievers thought that the people talking in tongues were crazy. Speaking in tongues was supposed to be a sign to unbelievers. After talking in tongues believers were supposed t o explain what was said and give credit to God. The unsaved people would then be convinced of a spirtual reality and motivated to look further into the Christian faith. But in verse 5 Paul says clear preaching is usually better.
