When I was a kid, the costumes were plastic, plastic outfit and plastic mask. it was the 70's and early 80's. I went out every year until about 13 then came the party scenes. I grew up in Portland Oregon, so it was usually cool and raining I remember having to wear a raincoat and boots over the costume. Good thing I was dressed up in plastic!!
It was at the peak of the razor blades in candy bars years when kids had to be warned not to eat ANYTHING, just put it in their bags and wait until after they got home and mom & dad had examined the haul.
I remember being completely dumbfounded by the reports of such inexplicably evil behavior toward children. It is the utter evil of such motivations and behaviors within the human species that makes belief in a Satanic force tenable. As psychologist and philosopher William James remarked:
" . . . there is no doubt that healthy-mindedness is inadequate as a philosophical doctrine, because the evil facts which it refuses positively to account for are a genuine portion of reality; and they may after all be the best key to life's significance, and possibly the only openers of our eyes to the deepest levels of truth."
