Has anyone filed divorce papers in Washoe County without a lawyer and were successful? I am about to do it and am worried about not getting an attorney but cannot afford one right now. We have no kids, it is not contested, and we will both fill out the forms and sign. Anyone with any experience would be greatly appreciated!!!

I did this in Ohio without any trouble (Judge said I did better that most attorneys). I would start by reading the law:

NRS: CHAPTER 125 - DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE

In my case after I found the right search terms (web search results will of course be stuffed with attorney spam) I actually found a county website with sample documents and pretty much step by step procedure for filing a dissolution.

Start by searching for Nevada pro se marriage dissolution. Dissolution is the term you are looking for, divorce is a contentious action where the two parties do noy agree. Good luck.

I'm sure there are a lot of people who handle similar cases just as you have. If you've filled out the applicable forms http://www.washoecourts.com/index.cfm?page=selfhelp correctly, there should be no issues.

Ok, thank you both! I have the forms and think I know what I need to do, I'm just worried that if I do one thing wrong or miss one document it may be thrown out and I'll be out of the filing fee. I will read as much as I can and just try to follow it to a t. Thanks for the advice!

Again, this isn't a Divorce.. it was uncontested.. Most states can and will dissolve a marriage when both parties agree without much trouble at all.

It's still a divorce, or the increasingly more common term "dissolution" whether contested or not. In most states, even an uncontested dissolution does not happen that fast. To the OP-glad everything went smoothly!

That's not been my experience.

A divorce is a decree from the court establishing new relations between the parties, including duties and obligations.

A dissolution is the court dissolving a marriage at the request of the parties involved (although technically applies to any contract) there are no new relations established by this.

States are of course free to redefine these terms, however I'm not finding any actual definitions for these in the NRC so I think blacks law dictionary would apply.

What is DISSOLUTION? definition of DISSOLUTION (Black's Law Dictionary)
What is DIVORCE? definition of DIVORCE (Black's Law Dictionary)

Regardless, hope everything works out for the OP.

If Black's doesn't even recognize the term "dissolution of marriage", then it's very much out of date. It's used in many states. In those states where it is used, it accomplishes the same thing that a divorce does on some state that uses that term- support, custody issues if applicable are dealt with the same way as if the term "divorce " is used.

Best of luck to the OP.
