Sorry, but I think there is still some misunderstanding about the tax burden data I showed in the first page.

The 3% tax burden increase in CA compared to NV in the data I showed is not a cost of living measure! Thankfully, we spend a higher percentage of our income with expenses other than taxes. There are several cost of living calculators out there online if you want to get a rough idea of the differences. According to CNN Money calculator the cost of living in Reno is about 30% lower compared to LA, so if you make 100K in LA, it would be able to have the same quality of life in terms of finances by making 70K in Reno.

In my case, I would take Reno weather over LA any day. I just love having the four seasons and a white holiday season.

Honestly, you live in a great area of California, but you have trade offs too. You either have quite a bit of fog, or it gets hot where you live. Your temperature extremes don't vary as much as ours, but we had snow at Christmas.

IMHO, dollar for dollar, the quality of life is cheaper here in Nevada by more than 3%.
I made no reference to CA, Nevada's problems can stand on their own two feet. My kids call this area The Shire, it is never hot, and never cold. Nothing bad ever happens here, all that stuff is beyond the boundaries of The Shire. The fog here is not like pogonip, the fog here is pleasant, keeps the temps moderate. We have not had a working furnace in two years, and no one here has air conditioning.

I lived north of Truckee off in the woods by Stampede Lake for 40 years, I do know snow. Our favored other property is near Austin Nevada, which aside from the depth of winter, is truly god's country. We also have 120 acres up on the old Monte Cristo Ranch.

I booked my trip next week to reno from jan 14-18. I will be staying at the Sands. I got it for $15 a night from hotwire.

I will be using the public bus transit to tour the city. 4 dollars for a 24 hour bus pass is amazing.

I plan to visit the downtown library, sierra view library, and northwest reno library.

i will try to take a jog down the truckee river walk in 20 degree cold.

i will eat at all the nearby buffets at sands, el dorado, silver legacy, harrahs.

i will visit the meadowood mall and rei and bikeshops and walmart.

i will visit apartment complexes that advertise vacancies.

anything else I should do?
