Hi, I've accepted a full-time job offer in Fernley. I'm a 22 year old guy, and I'll be living by myself. I assume I'll want to live in Reno since it doesn't look like there is much in Fernley. I start the job in late June and will have the chance to fly out in May to look around. What areas and specific apartments should I look at? I've looked at some rentals at Montage that looked nice. I can afford about $1,200 per month.

$1200 a month will get you a nice place up here. Come check it out, and consider staying in Fernley vs Reno to save wear and tear on a vehicle, and come here on the weekends. Just be open minded, and look at all options, because everyone has their own little world, and opinion. South Reno is nice, and Northern Sparks.

Have you ever seen the Shining? The movie about a dude who goes lives in a ski resort during the winter with his family and goes nuts. That will be you in Fernley after a few months. DO NOT LIVE IN FERNLEY! You're 22. You'll be so bored you'll start doing meth. Also, you don't need to live in the Montage, I think the rentals are overpriced, bc the owners have to pay like $400/mo in HOA which they pass on to you. Reno is cheap. You can find a very nice, clean, new 1-bedroom for $900/mo easy. Save up the $300/mo for booze. Check out craigslist for rentals. Downtown Reno is cool and Midtown right south of downtown is an up-and-coming Bohemian/hipster neighborhood but they don't have nice, new apartments, mostly house/room rentals. Avoid the followings streets: Montello, Wedekind, Grove, Neil and Pat Baker Park. Avoid the east side of Virginia St. It's not awful but a bit run down and a few pockets of crime. We don't have huge ghettos but small pockets of ghetto. Avoid anywhere near the Peppermill. NW Reno is nice. SW Reno is nice. I don't like Sparks personally bc their cops have nothing better to do than give out tickets and there's no nightlife in Sparks. Far South Reno has some nice homes for rent and is our upscale area. But if you work in Fernley, you want to live close to I-80 so it's less of a commute. Maybe live in east Sparks so you're even closer. You don't want to go too far north in Sparks or Spanish Springs bc then you'll have to sit in traffic just to get to I-80. I'd avoid Residences at Riverwalk Condos downtown bc they have swamp coolers not AC.

Living in Fernley would be very boring. On the other hand, the drive through the canyon can be pretty awful in the winter. And if your position/hours are not flexible...I've sat behind a major wreck for up to 5 hours with the road closed. There is another way around to Fernley from Reno/Sparks but it will take you about 90 minutes. So depending on your job, that could determine your living situation. If you live in Reno/Sparks there are some really nice places in Sparks and that would easily shave 20 minutes off your commute vs living downtown. And you are really only 15-20 minutes from anything in town. To drive north-south or east-west int eh Reno/Sparks metro area is not more than 30 minutes in good traffic and no weather.

I'd recommend getting an apt in Fernley for now. Get something reasonable in a decent area. Then you can spend time figuring out where you want to live, save up money in case you want to buy...etc... No sense worrying about it much, things change and it sounds like you're in a good situation being young/single and mobile..

This is probably the best advice. Get something tempoarary until you get the lay of the land, and figure out what works for you. Being in Fernley would put you close to work, but renting would give you the flexibility of leaving if the small town lifestyle drives you crazy. You could also get a feel for the commute during various times of the year, and decide for yourself.
