Okay; thanks. I guess it depends on what you're (I'm) used to. But then again, one can get used to things.

If I could ask, I've noticed people mentioning that Reno is dry. Would you, or anyone, know whether it's as dry or drier than Las Vegas? (Or "feels" as dry or drier?)

Nevada is the driest state in the nation, and Reno vs Las Vegas would be a difficult decision. I will tell you it feels dryer in the Winter than Summer, but when our news guy reports humidity it is higher. What even weirder is that snow evaporates rather than melt when it's cold. We both get summer storms, but I thinks ours may drop more rain. In the Winter it snows instead of rain.
If you look at vegetation we get more moisture. Our natural foliage can be 3 to 4' tall, and we have native Pinion pines at least where I am. This would make me think you might be dryer. We get to about 7% humidity in the Summer sometimes. I remember hiking out at your Redrock and there was a lot of water, but it was early May.

I am ready to pack my bag and move. I am sure there is a downside and I like to hear about them.

I am retired with SS and small pension. I believe my come is not taxable in NV. Correct?

I would be trying to find a 55+ rental house/apartment. Any recommendation?

Any recommendation on the best areas of the Reno area for least crime?

I believe NV is a medical marijuana state. Is there any problems with this?

I can see Reno is not far from the coast. Is there any good fresh fish retailers in or around Reno?

Thanks
Reno has a high crime rate, look at yesterday news 12.17.2013, poor educational system, high unemployment (9.5%) and a poor city which is having a very hard tie recovering from. Air lift is the worst with less than 50 flights a day, you can be virtually stuck in the city with out paying high dollars for airline ticket with multiple stops.

Downtown is dangerous, nothing to really do with an exception to one or two bars or restaurants and "ugly" looking casinos. Small town mentality, small minded business men who run their operations without any concern for their employee's while talking poorly behind their backs and once again too much competition.

If it wasn't for the Tahoe area, Reno would dry up and blow away with the wind.

Please provide verifiable statistics for your assertions, and compared to what? You're making claims without any context.

Some us have found a little piece of paradise away from the things you have mentioned. I agree that the public schools here are not the best, so we homeschooled. Shootings happen everywhere these days. Why should Reno be immune to them? Unemployment is high and recovering slowly. But some of us have marketable skills in any economy and there are so many people now who telecommute. I've never had any problem with air travel, even traveling constantly for business over the years. Yes, a bit more expensive but I've seen worse. Downtown is better than it used to be, has some culture now with nicer restaurants, Midtown, art museum, free Spirit bus on Virginia Street.

Maybe it's because I don't get downtown on a daily basis. But over the 30 years I've been here it feels like Reno has fewer (but what remains is mostly nicer) casinos. What Reno does have to offer is plenty of outdoor life, newer access to river activities, proximity to Lake Tahoe, still plenty of houses on larger parcels if you want your privacy, and there are some really great places to work here. I happen to work for a small employer where they care about the employees. If the roads are bad in the winter they are more concerned about your safe arrival rather than when you arrive. We get our vacation that we've earned and an extra week off at Christmas, on the house. We are gifted with small bonuses on holidays, hand delivered by the owners. The month of December we are treated to hot chocolate, lunches, baked goods, gift certificates at the same time we donate to the community and participate in gift wrapping the collections, delivering to the food bank, and taking gifts to the needy. Our company is family oriented and sick time can be used for yourself or to take care of your family. On the other hand, since it is a small business you are expected to do your part and put away the digital distractions while you are on the clock. Moms cans still take calls from their kids when they get home from school, leave for teacher conferences during the day...but we all pitch in as best we can.

I have great neighbors, have made wonderful friends over the years, and enjoy living just outside the city limits. Reno really has a lot to offer for the right people.

We stayed at the Extended Stay Motel on Gateway Drive (Southeast) this past summer for three months. It was VERY NICE. The management, employees and room conditions are great. Very safe area as well. Good luck to you. Reno is a very nice place to live.

There is a 55+ community on Summit Ridge in the Northwest part of the city that is in a nice area also.

Don't attempt to compare the two. LV is desert; Reno is high desert.

Wow and for your first post even. Bitter much? Dangerous? No Ugly? No Sorry your employer hates you but there are many amazing companies and employers, like mine, in this area. We are slowly recovering from the recession and yes, being near Tahoe is a major draw, but Reno/Sparks can still certainly stand on it's own merits as well. It's a beautiful place with friendly people.

I went through middle school, high school, and some college in Reno. Then moved to TN (Knoxville). I've been here for 6 years.

I'm thinking of moving back. I can't believe the rain we get here. It seems every day is either overcast or overcast and rainy. The spring it rains, the summer it rains (and terribly humid/buggy), fall is nice, and the winter it rains some more.

Reno is not perfect. It gets cold, windy and dry. But days of sunshine are unbelievable (almost every day). This is something I never valued while living there. It is high desert, so be prepared for cold, windy nights and constantly changing temps.

We're in different age groups. I'm single and in my 20's, and could never be prepared for the TN lifestyle. Football, church, and food are all that matters for most my age. It seems more women my age have several kids, several failed marriages and are in worse physical shape than many people in their 50's or 60's from the west coast.

I now have drifted completely off topic. I'm unfamiliar with pot laws, but I do believe they are more strict than CA.

San Francisco isn't too far and makes for a great weekend trip (with lots of great sea food).

I'm not sure of the safest areas, I have lived in Stead, and Cold Springs. I wouldn't recommend either. Reno's worst areas are likely much safer than Knoxville's worst.

I recently visited some of the new midtown areas in Reno. I had a great time and felt plenty safe. I also enjoy the big outdoor and artsy push they are experiencing.
