I feel bad. I'm pretty sure some of the local residents who frequent this board will have better suggestions. Sorry I couldn't be of any help. If I do run across a site that has actual "free" events, I'll post it here.

Usually they are in the newspaper; however, the winter months have less "free stuff" than the summer months. Both city web site offer information about everything going on in the parks and recreation and downtown corridor.

The summer months are when things really kick off and the newspaper is a good source (I use the on-line reference) too.

Starting in May -- River Festival on Mother's Day Weekend kicks off the season....

One other website to check is the Reno-Sparks Convention Visitors Authority, they keep a pretty good up-to-date calendar.

Thumbs down missingsomepatience

The woman is (was) in a severe time constraint to be moving out of one place and into another. You could have been more courteous and helpful instead of so snappy - huh?

Sorry for the delay in responding.

I really like it here. My sister and her family live here so the transition has been easy. And I was very lucky to find a job right away (seriously - there were 250 people applying for the job I got!)

My husband, however, is homesick for Hawaii. I mean, he's fine most of the time, and he agrees with the reasons for moving (Oahu got too expensive and too crowded with too much traffic and too much crime) but if he won a large jackpot at a casino that would allow us to move back and be able to buy a house, he'd be on the next plane! Do you know what he really misses? A horizon... He misses being able to look across the ocean to a horizon. And he misses the water - he surfed and paddled for years, and even though he wasn't doing those things by the time we left, it was always there to watch and to take up again if he wanted to.

And he's not working here -- he has a bad back and if he were to apply to a job along with 200 other people, there's no way they are going to hire him when they can hire someone with no health problems with the same skill set. So he took social security early and we make do.

It's really surprising how many people here are either from Hawaii or have a connection to Hawaii. In fact, my husband and I play a game where, whenever we see a car with a sticker or license plate that has a Hawaii connection (a Hawaiian word, or a honu, or whatevahs), we punch each other. So I get punched a lot because my husband drives around town more than me and has more opportunity to see it. We go to the Kona Girl shop from time to time to fill our pantry with li hing mui, Noh sauces, etc. And there are a couple of Asian groceries that we go to to stock up on futukaki and other essentials.

I'm not sure that I want to live here forever, but for now, it's good. If you can adjust to the climate, and if you can find a job, then you'll be alright. We had visited several times when it was cold so we knew what it would be like. If you haven't done so, you should. When I was younger I hated the cold and snow. Now that I'm older, I don't mind it and have I've enjoyed trying out snowshoing, sledding, etc. But if you don't like the cold/snow, then you won't like it here.

Good luck to you. Let me know if you come (or are here already!)

Thanks, Been looking to move out of Vegas. Places we really like are too expensive or far from friends and family. My wife and I have lived in big and small cites, like San Diego, Las Vegas, Honolulu, Fredericksburg VA, Jersey City. A few others. Vegas has cheap housing and descent pay, especially since we are in the medical field. We want to slower pace with close outdoor recreation. Lake Meade and Mt Charleston is okay, but both doesn't compare to the Sierras and Tahoe. A major plus is being 2 hours from Sacremento and SF is not too far away. Reno seems to have much of what we want. Moving there we can see who our real friends are. I hate when peeps go to Vegas and then BTW since you live here let's meet up.

you may also like Minden Genoa, Gardnerville. Carson City is iffy but still a safe place and all of these locations are between Tahoe and Reno. Carson being the fastest communte to both T and R.

My husband and I are retired and currently live in the U.P. of Michigan. We are thinking of moving to the Reno/Sparks area. We are in our mid-50's, have no children and enjoy outdoor activities. We treasure our peace and quiet and will be looking for a neighborhood that reflects this. We plan on driving out to Nevada in the near future but have no idea where to start looking. Can you recommend an area that may be a good fit for us?

Default Look at genoa

For us, the small town of Genoa is a perfect fit. We have beautiful views, quick access to skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, biking, kayaking, Lake Tahoe and golf. Reno is 40 minutes away with an airport we love, a medical school, University and a riverwalk.
Wind is variable, and this area seems to be less impacted than some others. The thing we miss the most are good, mid-level restaurants. La Ferme and Adelle's are good "special" places, and there are Applebees, and Olive Gardens, but not much in the middle. We bought a place in the Summit Ridge development, and our neighbors have a monthly block party, so it's been easy to make friends. Good luck!

You should start your own thread. You might get more response.

Anyway, The area northwest of Reno along I-80 is nice with mostly newer housing, shopping, etc. I think everything in that area was built in the last 25 years. When you drive out here, take exit 9 (Robb Dr.) off I-80 and look around. This is about 4 or 5 miles west of downtown.

Are you looking for a house or an apartment?

Thanks for the replies!

I have never posted on line before and this is too cool!

My husband has been reading your site for some time and encouraged me to log in and get some information.

To answer a question.....we are interested in a home. Preferably a newer home 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, and (this is a must) 3 car garage.

We have been looking at Zillow for quite some time and it's like looking at wallpaper....the more I see......the more overwhelmed I get.

Anyway, don't want to bore you, but we need help.

We are in our 50's, retired, enjoy jogging and biking, love movies, a good dinner out, reading books and occasionally like to play the slots.

We have no children nor pets.

I have been to Las Vegas just once in my life and my husband has never been.

As you can see.....we need your help.

Thank You!

Wanda
