Yes there is sales tax on rent and any other money collected at the city level. My most recent home I rented out it was 1.8% on $1350 a month that's an additional $24.30. I consider it a cost of doing business so I advertise "sales tax already included" and fill out my lease as rent of $1326.13 plus tax of $23.87 totaling $1350. I do tax any deposit deductions seperate though since I deduct what I pay and I'm not eating the sales tax when they damaged stuff.

A lot of places advertise the rent at $1350 and add the tax ontop. Hell it is common, as well as sad and frustrating, to see property managers list units with an additional 4%+ in the listing.

Just wondering if others find the same the their city or county?
Not either of those, but they do require that if you don't live in the county (I don't) you need to provide the name/address/phone number for someone who DOES live in the county and can be your "representative". Apparently this is just "in case" the city can't reach you at your personal residence/phone number provided.

A little ridiculous, if you ask me.

In AZ rent is some stated amount plus various cities and other jurisdictions add a percentage tax which is passed on to the tenant as the full rent payment including tax. The landlord reports the relevant figures and forwards the tax collected to the jurisdiction the rental is located in. This year most jurisdictions are transferring this authority to the Ariz. Dept. of Revenue.

The landlord collects rent plus tax, keeps the rent and sends the tax to the state, which presumably returns it to the jurisdiction the rental is located in. To be clear the tenant pays the tax, the landlord just forwards that to the gummint.

First thought off the top of my head: It's an immigration thing.

Trying to crack down on Illegal Immigrants who are renting out property. "You must have a drivers license." Get it.

But here is California we give all of our illegal, undocumented folks driver's license.

Have for a few years now.

I heard CA was supposed to mark the illegal alien drivers' licenses to indicate that they were not proof of US citizenship.

SS and identification for the landlord. I would guess that it isa city that has a city income tax. They are taking the landlord roles and cpmparing it to the income tax papers filed to make sure every landlord is paying income tax on the rent they receive.

Here is the odd thing...

I have properties registered for decades and never needed Social Security or Driver's License.

Registering a new first time single family and the new form says it is mandatory.

It is things like this that frost me because Oakland has had it's share of problems when it comes to data, employee/contractor issues, breaches, etc...

My brother said I should just fill in the blanks with the words "Sanctuary City" which is something the city fully supports across the board.
