I lived in Florida for a number of years and roaches are a part of life there and I would absolutely freak out if I saw a roach in my house. In addition to cleaning/caulking/ exterminating I also used Borax (you can find this in the laundry aisle of the grocery store). I made sure not to use it near food/pets/kids (some people say it's harmful/some say it's not). I would sprinkle it on my carpet, let it sit 20 minutes, vaccuum. I would also take the outlet covers off, use a turkey baster to get it inside the walls and put the covers back on and sprinkle it under my fridge/stove. Roaches walk through it, lick it off their feet, swell up with gas and blow up (my revenge for them coming into my house). It's cheap and doesn't have any smell like bug sprays.
Also, Combat roach gel or max force gel works like a charm. Thank God I don't have this problem right now, but past apartments have...ugh I hate to even think about it. Anyway, the gel goes in crevices - seams in cabinets, under counters, under sink, etc. Don't spray over it because they won't eat it (they think it's food). That plus the walk-through bait plus borax worked for me. Ugh I'm getting creeped out.
Years ago we lived in an apartment which was a nice apartment, but had a very bad roach problem. Everyone I knew there did. And they did exterminate monthly. I solved the problem very simply with some Combat roach disks/baits. Don't know if Combat is as effective as it used to be, (this was years ago) but it worked for me beautifully when everyone else was still fighting the situation.
What if a cat eats a roach thats walked in borax?
I know at the last place after they sprayed..Some came out. The cats ate them and instantly puked. I am guessing this as the both puked at the same time during the roaching hours (3-5am) The heaving woke me up. But that was at the old place with spray and roach gel. I think borax would be ok-ish around the cats. But the boric acid strait is bad. Another non-toxic powder you can use is diatomaceous earth.
Ok..So famous last words right...I didnt see anything when cleaning. I didnt see anything at all until the other night. I saw one about the size of the babies I saw at the old place. A little bigger. I would say a week older. It was walking up the kitchen wall.
Yech! I am hoping it was a lone hitchhiker as the only thing I didnt totally take apart was the filter top to the catbox. I had first set it down right where I saw the thing walking up the wall. I think it was poisoned as it was going very slow. Just a tiny spurt of raid and the thing dropped dead. All the horror stories of how people sprayed them with raid and they kept on running had me so freaked out.
We are getting caulking stuff this week anyway. Theres really not that much to do in this place. If there were babies here I know I would be seeing them by now.
(now lets hope that thats not another set of famous last words.)
And oh...does putting down bait draw them in if they are not already here? Because I am really not looking to do that.
LOL
I would like to be able to just put them out and leave them out as a preventative measure. But not if its going to draw a crowd.
