In most threads regarding vandalism, crime, rental properties, etc, the topic of section 8 government housing arises. I tried doing some research but couldn't get all of my questions answered.

How does a single family home become a section 8 house? Do individuals seek out HUD to purchase their homes or does HUD resell homes that foreclosed that were originally financed using FHA loans? Or is it something completely different?

Can section 8 houses pop up anywhere? Is there any way to locate section 8 houses in your community?

Thanks!

You can apply to have any house as Sec. 8 housing.
Each area has set limits on what rental rate they offer.
It is not terribly high so of course you are going to find more in lower priced areas.

I'm not looking to buy, I am just curious how one random section 8 house can end up in the middle of a subdivision. I also read a post where someone said "you can sell your house to the government for a below value price", and I was wondering if this is true. It's just a topic I am not at all familiar with, and want to know more since I am reading more and more about it lately.

Some owners would rather rent their houses out through section 8 than do it themselves. This way they are guaranteed their money.

First you advertised your house for rent ; add to the advert that section 8 accepted. Then when you have a potential section 8 tenant, she fills in some paperwork, you fill other paperwork ; usually the tenant will pick up all the paperwork. The tenant needs to do this because she needs to get permission form the section 8 housing to move.

Then a few weeks go by and section 8 housing inspectors come to inspect the house. They give you a list of repairs ; mainly safety ; like smoke detectors in al bedrooms, top of stairs etc.

Then another few weeks go by and voila ; the tenant can move in.

If only it were that easy.

You better always find out first what Sec. 8 is paying in the area.
Sometime you get more on the open market.

You also need to be approved for Sec.8 housiing first and in some areas it is not that easy.

"I'm not looking to buy, I am just curious how one random section 8 house can end up in the middle of a subdivision"

Are you maybe seeing a house with a HUD sign on it?
If so, it is probably a foreclosure that is now owned by HUD and has nothing to do with the Section 8 rental proram.
