My property taxes alone are more than 2x my largest ever house payment (P&I). Taxes went from $800 / yr to $12,000 / yr in 10 yrs (yes, $30/day) just because the assessor could. The state supreme court threw out the voter approved 3% cap on increases, and the county assessors went wild.

I need to cough up $6k by Oct 30, I need a sad looking dog to accompany me and my cardboard sign to a freeway off ramp. "Anything helps"

Why spend $600 per month? Here's one anyone who can retire should be able to buy for cash. The weather is nice; the crime is probably negligable to nonexistant. If you're wondering why I didn't buy it, it's because I'm looking for a bigger house with decent acreage.

There are many areas now with depressed economies. A few areas that had poor economies even before the current recession/depression.

So long as you are not looking for employment, you should be able to go to any of these areas and buy a home for $20k with taxes under $1k/year.

Sure, that's great...if you want to live in Cleveland, or God forbid...ELFRIDA!!!

I think that some of you are missing the point of the article. Of course there are cheaper places to buy a house. The purpose of this article was to delineate ten desirable places to buy a retirement home for under $600/month. That is also why a synopsis of each city's amenities and other reasons for relocating there was included. Note also, that they didn't search out the cheapest property in each locality, they just worked from the median.

Desirability is very subjective. To you, Las Vegas is desirable. To me a rural area where I can see the stars, walk around my property without fear of crime day or night, not be troubled by urban noise, and have plenty of space between me and the neighbors is paramount.

Although I am not retired, I'm of an age of many who are. I have no interest in bars, casinos, or the dubious amenities of the city. People do vote with their feet. Like-minded people find the same areas. If I'm in a mood to socialize, I'll be far happier in a place like like Elfrida than I ever could be in Las Vegas, Cleveland, or any other nest of permanently unfulfilled desire for inclusion in worthlessness.

You have common misconceptions about Las Vegas. Yes, there is gambling here, but for most retirees like me, that is not what attracted me to this area. My wish list included low cost of housing, attractive 55+ community, easy access to a major airport, access to healthcare, no state taxes, low humidity and beautiful mountains. Las Vegas has all of these. We all choose areas that best suit our needs, as you have done. But don't knock parts of the country that don't appeal to you.

I am quite familiar with Las Vegas, and have no misconceptions. I certainly appreciate low taxes, low humidity, and beautiful mountains. My goodness, look here I live. But I do not appreciate high crime in business districts, onerous government intrusion, a long-time feature of Clark County, blistering heat, or general urban congestion. I'm capable of driving to find needed medical services. I seldom need an airport. Should I become very ill, helicopter service is available everywhere. I don't know what you mean by an ''attractive 55+ community''. People over fifty-five certainly aren't normally attractive. I can verify that everyday when I shave.

You seem very angry about anyone's criticizing what you have chosen. I've certainly observed that in people from Chicago, Detroit, etc., but never from folks in what I consider to be the best parts of the country. But don't worry. If it's really that great, you can just sneer at the people who don't agree.
