Some people will move when they retire and some won't. If you move will it be to a big city with over 300,000 population or something a lot smaller?
If you have moved already then I'd like it if you would mention the population of the city you chose to retire in. Let's see what size of city is the most popular with retirees.
LOL, we plan to move in about 5 years. Currently we live in a small village, no kidding, and have loved it here. Recently, due to a major manufacturing company locating here, our town is growing and we simply do not like living right in the mix of things. On the fringe, yes, but not in the middle. We love our space so we purchased land a few miles outside town located on an isolated hill. We plan to build our dreamhome here and have enough room to do whatever we please.
I love the rural setting, far enough out to do with what I please on my land, and close enough to larger towns so I can get necessities quickly and medical is within 15 minutes. Country living at it's best for us.
Since we don't like big towns to begin with....that's an easy one, LOL. Just give me a town big enough for internet access and a town near enough to have good health care and we are fine.
The town we actually live in right now has less than 300 but it's a bedroom community to a small city of over 100,000. Liz

Would never live in any place with more than 35,000 people or any place with less than 7,000 people, pre or post retirement.
Aside from that, my opinion is that people who have lived most of their life in an urban environment should look for another urban (it could be smaller) environment in retirement. People who have lived in a suburban environment most of their life should look for another suburban environment in retirement and people who have lived in a rural environment should look for another rural environment when they retire. It's all about what you like to do and what you are used to doing to keep busy. If you have lived in a big city all of your life, moving to a town of 20,000, just because it's cheap, is pretty and has nice weather, isn't going to make you happy.
I moved from a FL over 300,000 people to a town of 7,580 and love it. Only 30 minutes to bigger city with mall shopping, movies and anything else you want or need with out the crime or traffic in everyday life. When I moved here I couldn't believe fast food places took checks, although that has changed now, but there are still a lot of places that don't credit cards but will take a check. It is worth the drive to have a safe place to live and not have to think what traffic might be like if you have to run to the store during rush hour.
We moved from the big city out in a rural area and we couldn't be happier. I spent most of my life in large cities and don't miss it. We are close enough to visit the bigger city, and visit our grandchildren too.
It looks like most of you are going to small towns. That's what I like too. The city I live in has about 10,000 but it's adjoined to another city of 16,000. Then there are some small suburbs. It seems it's getting just a crowded for me.
I'm thinking we might move somewhere smaller in a couple of years or just move out farther away from things. We get tourists so traffic can get bad.
I was wondering about the size of the city many retirees were living in because you often see big cities recommended for retirement spots. I think they should find more smaller cities.
