For a long time we kept getting "We are tech support from Microsoft and we would like to help you out with a possible virus".I'm not very tech savy but even I knew Microsoft would never be making personal phone calls.
I doubt anybody savy enough to be on the internet very much would fall for any of these but you never know. If you know of somebody living alone who may be vulnerable to this sort of thing please pass this information on. Older people are sometimes too trusting.
I got this twice, but they just said they knew I was having computer problems. It was both times. I download a program from a major download site and did not uncheck the junk that comes with it. I am guessing that the program snap.do (name might not be spelled correctly) came with it and highejacked my brouser and net work settings. Took a few hours to fix so most people would probably be thankful for the call. It made a very big mess. The point is they were able to figure out my phone number and call. The second time I was using a new user on the same computer and the browser was high jacked and they called again.

I'm highly suspicious. It's possible that you are being set up for a bigger problem.
Please find a second opinion on what may be going on with your computer. Microsoft does *not* phone users like that. If it was someone other than Microsoft, I'm still suspicious.

If it was an unsolicited call believe me microsoft DOES NOT CALL its computer users. Can you imnagine how much manpower that would take. These scams are all over the internet and the "Microsoft Tech Suport scam is a big deal.
Simply google Tech Support Calls Scam and you will find many entries. Here is only one.
If you have an Amex card and call the customer service number from memory, you might forget that it is 888 not 800. If you mistakenly call the wrong number (e.g. everything the same as the real Amex number but 800 instead of 888) you will end up at a scam number. They will try to get you to buy a groupon type thing and if you give them your Amex account number you will regret it.
that is just too sneaky. i can see some "service re" asking "What is your account number please" and that is so easy to fall for. there ought to be a law against that kind of phone number deception.

I agree 100%. That has red flags all over it.
I hope they did not ask him to install something as part of their fix. If so, that computer should not be used until it is properly cleaned.
Microsoft has free anti-virus (not sure why anyone pays Norton or the others) called Security Essentials. Don't trust me, look it up yourself.
I used to get the computer calls, until I started saying "oh, you have a computer for me. Yes I want it. My old was broke. Yes, you bring (no address ever)" All in broken English with an accent of choice for the day. No matter what they said, I just said that over and over.
I just tell them I dont have a computer and they hang up. A couple of times I just started laughing and they hang up even faster!
