I'm not over 65, but on my last birthday, I did receive a $50 gift card for Amazon. I am a frequent Amazon book buyer and have a huge wish list of books, but when I got this card, I decided to buy some original Desert Boots. They were actually$75, but I did use my gift card to offset the price.

I forgot what the original point of the OP was . . . why is this of interest?

I think part of the point was to see if the shopping habits of people over age 65 have changed. Also, to see what sort of things we buy.

I've downsized and have a very simplified life so I really have no need of places like Amazon now. I'm at the stage in my life when I am not in acquisitions mode. If we need something, my husband likes to go to Home Depot and look around but once you have simplified, it's rarely that you need to buy anything.

I think the last thing I bought from Amazon was my GPS and that was about four years ago. I buy on ebay though--things you can't get elsewhere. I just bought two sets of chair caning materials and we will make it our summer project to cane two antique dining chairs. I learned how to do it a long time ago in a class. We are both DIY=do it yourself. We enjoy it.

I buy from amazon but its not always the cheapest for everything and some items are cheaper to order from like Wal Mart with easier return; no questions asked. Amazon though is a handy place to do comparison shopping. As to my plumber he has been doing our work for decades and I always get it thru Same with our heating and air conditioning guy his father di all our families for decades before him. Last time I called he came out on saturday himself as others where off and took care of the problem.

Books for my Kindle, which, of all my electronic devices (and I have a lot - smartphone, regular Kindle, big Kindle, ipad, a fleet of ipods, Kindle Fire tablet, netbook, 15" laptop, desktop, bluetooth speakers, etc etc) is one of the last things I would part with.

Also, I have this book:

The Medieval Kitchen: Recipes from France and Italy: Odile Redon, Françoise Sabban, Silvano Serventi, Edward Schneider: 9780226706856: Amazon.com: Books

and my taste buds and I are glad to be living now.

I too would buy books but the old fashioned kind. I still prefer the tactile feel of the printed page. But then, I'm an old fashioned kinda guy.

If it had to be just one item, I'd choose a new handbag (what can I say?)

If it could be any number of items, ebooks perhaps. Or some of the things on my wishlist--travel books right now.

I would buy Kindle books and gourmet food items, some of which are currently on my wish list so that I don't forget them.
