The butterflies are an entirely natural reaction to a huge life change.
If you haven't already, now you get to decide how you want to spend your retirement- make it a blast!
I am four years away from retirement- if I am able to I will hang on for another five years, but I am keeping my options open on that.

In the meantime what do I do for the rest of the day? Never mind, I'll find something.
just as a joke, on Monday go back to your workplace and stand outside staring into the windows

That's funny as hell! Can you imagine the reaction of the former co-workers inside? I'm still chuckling.

I'm so jealous, I have 596 days, 12 hours, 30 minutes and 10 seconds left (but I'm not counting). I have a major system launch next summer and then just need to train my replacement and I'm gone. It's been fun, but I am ready.

Yeah, and that will make you look crazy and your ex-co-workers will be glad you're gone... great suggestion

Lucky you. Don't spend your money all in one place.

Let it be so!

Retired 4 years ago in a not altogether happy departure, but I was past it. I had turned into one of the old fogies who had seen too many management fads that seemed just like ones I had seen 10, 20 or 30 years ago (with same outcome!). Took 4-5 months to really decide I had retired, and 12 months before I stopped waking up 10 mins before the work alarm time.
Feel retired now, so I keep track of the day of the week and season but don't know nor care today's date.

My only advice is do what makes you comfortable - there are plenty of people like Marc Paolella who doubt they will ever stop (and I hope his health allows him to work till the end), many who need to do something valuable/productive like volunteering to feel fulfilled but also many who are happy just pottering around. Be happy with whatever works for you.

Passing thought - will anyone know or care how you spent your retirement 50 years from now?

Keep up and keep active with hobbies , as the work never ends until the end of life , see people who stop doing something active for their bodies , then end of their life comes to collect them
