Better to ask why women fuss so much over their hair, and (often) participate in the knocking of other women's hairstyles - until they reach 60 or so, and then suddenly it's "oh, whatever's easiest."
Why is hair so dang important to them for so many decades, and then suddenly, it's not? Why wait so long to do what is easy and convenient?
Anything which most people are not used to seeing is going to be jarring and unattractive until enough time has elapsed to get used to it. It is not about people's "rights". In our society (at least until quite recently), as in most societies, there are men's hairstyles and women's hairstyles. All the OP is saying is that he finds the ultra-butch look jarring and unattractive. Why does that merit such vociferous condemnation?
Just as all of us, men and women, have the right to choose any hairstyle, so all of us, men and women, have the right to our opinion about how various hairstyles look. There sure isa lot of testiness and over-reaction in this thread.

I think some of the reaction is due to the fact that many women have been under the impression that 1) it is reflective of various archaic notions about stereotypical social roles to talk about men's vs. women's haircuts as there really isn't any such thing anymore and hasn't been for a quite a while like maybe 50 years or so; 2) it is pretty condescending- and maybe naive- to make a comment or ask a question about a woman's particular personal choice and then be upset when you get reactions you weren't expecting; 3) let's look at the term "butch" or "ultra-butch". These are socially laden terms that I thought we as a culture had grown out of. Both are pejorative and indicative of a narrow minded view that holds women are supposed to look a certain way, and those that don't must be butch (lesbian or looking like a man). It apparently isn't possible that a wide variety of women of various sexual orientations simply like their hair a certain way without having an archaic label attached to them. I wear my hair short because I like it that way; it fits my lifestyle. If you want to make certain assumptions about me based on my short hair, then have at it. The fact that someone wants to label my look butch is ok with me because it tells me about your world view. But just as you have the right to put that label on me, I have the right to voice my opinion on that particular label.
I have said my piece. Carry on.

Maybe because some women don't make a big deal about how a man looks?
We laughed about this last week. My niece was shocked when I told her that I would never be with a man that was over weight or wore tee shirts. And other things - scraggly scruffy hair for instance.
She thought it was funny. Had never heard a woman make a declaration like this.
If I were one of those women with cute little heads, I would have short hair, and it would be a wonderful relief. I lost my hair once to chemotherapy, so I know I am not one of those people. I have a big old head so I keep my hair chin length.
I have always been a bit puzzled by the way old ladies always seem to get short hair and perms. What's that about? Maybe it is the fluffiness hides thinning hair.
