I have some Silver coins that was passed from my Grandfather, to my Dad, and now to me....regardless of the price of Silver, they are priceless to me and going nowhere. I was going to pass a few to the daughters of a very close friend, along with the history of where they came from, and when my friend told me "They're just Quarters" i opted not to.

My FIL just dumped 2,000 silver dimes on me. Wife wants me to go through for rare dates and mint marks. Heavily circulated coins, I'll pass on the go through and cash them in for silver content.

Reminds me of an older gent who walked into a coin dealer while I was looking for coins during the '70s. He had a coffee can full of silver halves he had just thrown in over the years and wanted silver value. Dealer counts up the coins and hands him bills for whatever silver was going for at the time. I'll bet that dealer made a mint in numismatic value on all those halves.

After the Wall Street run up of coin values during the '80s, I've been holding, waiting for values to appreciate again.
Values did appreciate, hitting over $50/ounce in 2011. The only time they've been higher was in 1980. Prices have fallen to $16-17/oz today. I sold all of my silver coins in 2011.

I traded in junk silver (pre '64 coins) many years ago but it is simply too much trouble for the potential gain now. A bag of junk silver ($1000 face) weighs over 50lbs, must be stored somewhere, usually requires cash transactions, and is not traded easily as it must be hauled to a dealer.

I did make a huge profit when the market was driven up in the early eighties but figure that was a fluke and have been out since.
