I like traveling with Southwest and pay the extra for priority seating. If I travel with other family members we buy it for them too because I don't believe in "saving" seats for others that haven't paid for priority seating. Now if someone was just using the restroom as we were boarding or it was a connecting flight and they were at a food kiosk during that time I have no problem with saving the seat because it was their seat first.

As a road warrior business traveler, I like Southwest. You can book/change a flight on fairly short notice and throw $15.00 at it to get an aisle seat and early boarding to have a spot for your roll-aboard. They don't have a change fee. I also fly United a lot but don't have any elite FT status with them at the moment. On short notice, there often aren't any aisle seats unless you shell out money the bean counters won't let me expense for Economy Plus. They also have an outrageous change fee so you usually end up eating any ticket you book in advance at a discounted fare.
Yes, you're right. I usually am in a low "B" boarding group by checking in online and don't pay much attention to the wheelchair, family, and "A" group boardings. Maybe the low "B" group is the sweet spot because it still allows a great choice of seats while allowing us to see any potential sound hazards.

I really like that Southwest allows you to change flights without any fees. I've had to change flights many times, and often I even get a lower price. The difference is put into my account to use for future flights. I also like that Southwest has a deal with the TSA for Precheck without cost to the consumer. I can't remember the last time I had to go through normal security, and I love that.

Is there a list of permissible topics around
The main reason that this might not be the best forum for this thread is that in the Aviation forum you may encounter more people who are knowledgeable about the airline industry.

Airline travel is stressful enough. Why add to the stress with the uncertainty of where you're going find a seat. I would never fly an airline with unassigned seating

Are you sure? My daughter just flew from the west coast to the east coast and back again for under $200. Flight was reserved but not the seating.

We fly Southwest exclusively, because with our Southwest Credit Card, flights are free! We pay the extra $15 for the "early bird check-in" which basically means THEY check you in, and then you find out your boarding number when you print your boarding pass. When they bought out Air Tran years ago, we were very leery of the no assigned seats thing, and once it back fired on us big time because we were late getting there, my mother was in a wheelchair and I couldn't find a parking spot at MKE, but that's the only time. I do however believe it takes longer, because the first people on usually sit in front, and are therefore blocking the aisle getting their bags in the overhead. It IS kinda dumb that way. But, their flights are reasonably priced, they fly non-stop to Tampa, Ft. Myers, LA and LaGuardia which are pretty much the only places we fly, and we haven't paid for a flight in many years. So we're happy!!!

And how old is your daughter? If I were 30 I wouldn’t care where I sat as long as it was a cheap flight.

Interesting that this topic would come up the same day as this article appeared in USA Today...

In this case I don't think seat saving should be allowed, that's the point to having the "pay to be first" and such.

Southwest should take a stand on this.
