State troopers were "Brown Hats" because of the uniform they wore at the time and of course everyone was told to slow down and 'watch out for the Brown Hats!'
Here there is no special name for different types of law enforcement. They are all "police".
Interesting how terms change over the years.
Never heard "brown hats" but back in the 70's troopers (not local cops) were called Smokey's because in some states they wore Smokey Bear style campaign hats (not in my home state of NJ though). That was CB radio lingo that was popularized by the movie Smokey and the Bandit.
Since the 1990's-early 2000's I've heard "ghetto slang" 5-0 (as in Hawaii 5-0) and "Da Po-Po's" to refer to the police.

State Troopers- Smokies
Sheriffs/deputies- County Mounties
Local PD- Local Yokels
Those terms were used back then, and are still used today.
5-0 was also used back then, after the original series aired beginning in 1968.
Fuzz, cops, heat, 'The Man', Narcs (undercover narcotics cops, specifically), Adam-12, boys in blue, Dick Tracy (detectives, specifically), ocifers, plus the others already mentioned.
The Man
Spaz
Stella
Catch you on the Flip Side
Out to Lunch (like not all there)
Cool Beans
To the Max
Lay a Gasser
Skinny (as in "give me the skinny")
10-4, good buddy Bogue (that is spelled correctly; never heard of it)
Space Cadet
Sit on It
Take a Chill Pill
What a Fry
Stop Dipping in my Kool Aid
Brick House
Psyche!
Do me a Solid
Boogie Down
Well, I graduated high school in the 70's and feel I grew up then and the 60's but some of these terms I have never heard and some I still use. I have been known to say Cool Beans and To the Max sometimes; not often but sometimes.
I've heard people say he's a spaz (back then) and people still say they work for The Man.
How about you? Supposed to be a fun thread.
I actually remember a lot of people saying "Really" to everything and also "Far Out"
I totally remember "bogue" -it was very popular in my part of the country in the 70s!- I'd forgotten all about it - haha.
"He/she is such a fox!"
"Look out, here comes Johnny Law."
You didn't smoke weed, you smoked pot or reefer. "Anybody got a doobie?"
"He's a trip."
Calling someone a "turkey."
