I just don't understand why retired people want to re-locate. If you are unhappy where you live and think that can be cured by a new location, you may be surprized to find that you had to bring unhappy self along.
Who said anyone was unhappy? We are not, we just want something different than what we have.

Same here. Folks were even shocked that I would drive 'all the way' from Minnesota to Arizona & stay by myself in motels. They were equally surprised when I made the decision to move here, all by myself.
Considering that I have been single for years, I was surprised that they were surprised. I got a lot of, aren't you scared/worried to go so far from home?
Nope.
They wouldn't think twice about a man doing what I did.
It's worked out great for me so far.
I get some "That sounds lonely!" Hel-looo, I'm all alone HERE...

I agree with Mikala43 - whoever said I was unhappy in NYC?! We just couldn't afford to retire and live there. We are happier here than we were in NYC - mostly because he is now retired. There's things about everywhere he or I have lived that we loved or hated but things don't determine personal happiness. We didn't move for a cure from an illness neither of us had! We moved to begin a new phase in our lives, to start a new adventure! I love learning about new places, seeing new things, finding out about NEW! different! It's the same reason we love to travel - new experiences.
As the folks on the Tennessee boards. I've been bugging the crap out of them since 2012 and I still don't have a decision made.
Keep in mind you’re retired. You don’t have to go to the crappy local areas. You can stay in Johnson city or greater Knoxville and avoid the Kingsport and Hawkins Counties of the world
We've talked about moving every 5 years, just to experience different stuff. Don't know if we will do it, but still on the table.

You know what? It doesn't matter. There is good and bad everywhere -- go someplace and deal with it. You'll always be near a WalMart and bad drivers and 200 channel cable and barking dogs.. Taxes will all even out, whether it is income tax in one state or property tax in another. It never snows in Florida, Texas or Arizona.
