When we were in our teens/20s hitchhiking was still a popular thing to do, but nowadays not only is it considered very unsafe but you can actually get in trouble in places for picking up hitchhikers. But did any of you? I did once when I was 19 and while not assaulted thankfully, the guy that picked me up was all kinds of creepy and I never did again, but I am old enough where I know quite a few who did.
when I went to Britain I was picked up by a truck driver who told me they seldom picked up hitchhikers because the hitchhiker would threaten to claim assault if the trucker didn't give them some money.
In the mid 60s I hitchhiked to/from school (16 miles each way). Never a problem - jacket and tie, loaded down with books, not a threat to anyone, always had a ride (or two or three) within minutes. [ In rain or bad snow, we were forced to take the bus - 35 cents each way, and 60 minutes of torture ].
Hitchhiked to a local lake for social activities in the warm months. It was a way of life for many teens back then.
Very, very few friends had access to personal cars. If the family car was available and my older siblings didn’t have “dibs” on it, I was able to drive. Otherwise, the thumb was out.

I did fairly regularly for awhile and it was interesting the people I met. It probably wasn't the safest then and now even less safe.
Yes, a number of times. Usually good experiences but also 2 creepy ones, one in NJ and one in Germany.
