Is everyone posting on Craig's List, free sites, etc., letting strangers in your house? No, thanks!

I'm with you. Not letting strangers on Craigs list know i'm moving or letting them in my house.

When people don't want Waterford crystal or Limoges china (can't even give it away), my Bernhardt sofa didn't have a chance of having a second life somewhere else.

I had a huge dumpster in front of my house and I couldn't believe that I filled it up!

You don’t let them in your house. You leave it out Kerbside per private message on time and give the cross streets.

Yep. We have done this and you won’t believe how many people drive around in their pick up trucks looking for free stuff. The guy across the street was landscaping and he saw us putting a large cabinet out front with a free sign, boom he took it.

OP said they were "two old folk" who couldn't move the furniture into the garage, so I expect moving it to the curb would present a similar problem (for us single ladies, too). Then there's the issue of moving it from the curb if no one picks it up and the garbage truck won't take it...

You don’t have to give any reason for getting rid of stuff so no one needs to know you are moving. Just take a picture, describe as free and only give your address out to respondents who sound ok.

Or just get it to the curb and put a free sign on it. Can’t take it yourself? Pay neighborhood teens or young folks to haul it there. You don’t have to let strangers in the house or even let them know you are old.

Never had a problem with people not picking up. You post a free item on fb freebies, first come first served and where inevitably it gets picked up. If you want to argue all the reasons it doesn’t work so be it.

If I was on my own then I’d ask my son to help, if not my son, then id ask any neighbours, or the local church. There is always a way around problems.

When we were getting the keys handed to us on our house the wife pointed to an area and told the realtor this would be a perfect spot to put a piano.
He said if you don’t already have one don’t buy one because people are always giving those away around here.

I'm not sure if they pick up, but our local Habitat store has fast turnover on furniture, even brown furniture, even when it seems overpriced. Couple times, I've been disappointed when I tried to wait for the end of month discount.
