Is that the airfare for one or two tickets? We were paying <$600/person to go to Europe while living in NY but airfares to Europe from the West Coast cost at least twice as much. We paid ~$2100 in RT airfares last September for our trip to Italy from Boise.

Back to the OP, a friend of mine took a Viking River Cruise in Europe few years ago and really liked it. We cruised with RCI to Croatia and Greece while in Italy last fall. We paid something like $2200/2 for 7 days. Wines, service charges and land tours added something like $1K. The total cost of our 15 days trip (7 days cruise, 4 days in Venice, 3 days in Florence, 1 day in Bologna + land transportation) was about $7K.

It was the first time we were on a big cruise ship. It was much smoother than being on smaller ships (we did quite a few of live-aboard scuba diving trips before) and there were lots of food and entertainments but it was quite 'impersonal'. Not sure whether we want to be on a big cruise ship again especially when we want to spend more time exploring attractions on land.

We have done the river cruises with GATE1 Travel. Small river ships and only about 130 passengers. Really nice and we really enjoyed,Stopped at same places as Viking. Less expensive and with dinner all the wine and beer are included. Really a great company to use for tours as well !
