Some country clubs around here have closed, they were popular 20 years ago or so, but different populations moved in so they're just not as popular and many have closed. Go to the richer areas, however, like Boca Raton and West Palm Beach you'll find nice country clubs.
Leesburg, FL is on my long list of places to check out. I think a lot of the "country clubs" at golf courses these days are more or less restaurants/bars that happen to be located on a golf course. They aren't the big, exclusive social venues with high membership dues that they once were. That's o.k. by me. But for those looking for a more traditional country club, those restaurant/bars might not fill the bill.

We're under four years from our planned retirement and have a strong interest in The Villages and OTOW in Ocala too.

We're going down later this year to do a quick visit to each of these communities and a few others that we're aware of.

If we like what we see and we're still interested, we'll schedule formal lifestyle visits at the respective communities in about 24-30 months as we start getting closer and we get our plans in order.

We're also looking into the idea of buying a nice lot and building a new home here in NC instead of retiring to FL.

The pro's and con's list for FL vs. NC is definitely taking shape!

There's a website called "55 places" that provides info and reviews of "active over 55" communities in the US and it might be a good way for you to evaluate some of the possibilities. I have been using the site to check what is currently on the market and what the residents say.

Thank you for the tip. I was just wondering how, exactly, to go about researching this from a distance.
