We retired almost 2 years ago , moved from Utah to Mississippi , spent 15 months there , big mistake , moved to South Carolina . So far everything great & wonderful . Tax wise lots of advantages for seniors on a fixed income , low prices for housing , insurance , taxes , food prices ok , as are most everything here is reasonable . One won't get rich if one is working here , while the cost of living is very low. Unless we hear of or find a cheaper place to live that doesn't have winter were probably hear for the duration of life . Any suggestions ??, only negative thing we can find is the humidity & the ants. Open to suggestions.. Thanks to everyone..
It doesn't hurt to look around and see what other places there are to consider. I believe just about any place will have some ants.
To get away from the humidity you might want to consider the southwest. The eastern part of Texas is humid but not west Texas. There are some pretty inexpensive towns over there. They have no state taxes but watch out for the property taxes. Another place to consider is some of the cities in New Mexico. Some of the bigger cities are higher priced but many of the smaller cities are pretty inexpensive.

Problem is no matter where you live there is always something that is not to our liking. I live in AL love everything about the place but the flies.. lived in FL loved everything for a while, but then taxes, insurance and crime became a big issue. Lived in OKC nice place and people, little humitity but it is COLD when the wind blows and HOT when the wind blows down the plains. Lived in Panama CA, warm all year, brought home tarantula in bananas, snakes, but great shopping and wonderful restaurants.
Best advice, focus on the good things, the bad show up soon enough. Haven't found any place to be perfect, it is just a matter of how bad is it really?

You could go to a small town in the south west to escape humidity, but I'm not sure snakes, scorpions and 100+ degree summer days may be a trade off you consider desirable.
Well, If you don't fancy high humidity and bugs, and don't want to live in a place which has winter, then as someone else said, the southwest is your place. some people find the 3 seasons there (warm, hot, and hotter), a bit monotous but some people love it. Silver City, Truth or Consequences, and socorro, NM might be to your liking. They are small and the first two are a bit isolated , but they are cooler than Las Cruces or Alamogordo. Good luck.
