When I attended my 25th highschool reunion, I was amazed that so many folks looked really old.
Being in a room filled with people my age was weird. Just in trying to guess ages, if I had meet most of them on the street, I would have guessed that they were much older.
So to an extent, I can see where my generation is in poor health over-all.
I have been retired for 8 years so far, and I am doing okay.
Perhaps your classmates said the same about you on their way home.
Most people can detect aging in everyone else's apperarance but their own.
I find it very difficult to believe that this cohort is going to be any worse off physically (though probably financially) than my parent's generation. My parents were born just before WWI, and when this group reached middle age and old age they were boozing, pigging out on the world's most fattening foods, smoking more often than not and doing zilch in the way of exercise. And going to their funerals...especially the men, was a standard social event for the next generation's young adult years.
I think Boomers (and I am not one) have a long way to go before they beat the old folks in lousy life style....finances clearly excepted
Sure not the case for the generation ahead of me.
They were farmers who got more excercize via hard work in one year than many boomers got in their lifetime.
Most of my neighbors a generation ago reached 90.
Where the heck did you grow up that the generation ahead of the boomers were such physical losers ?

That's just it. The longevity statistics are mostly due to a big decrease of infectious disease killing young and greatly decreased child and maternal mortality. Remove those from the 19th century stats along with accidents, and you don't have a longer lifespan today.
My family has very good stats.. My great uncle smoked a pipe til he was 80, did lots of hiking, ate what he wanted (i.e., lots of fat), kept his wits and died just short of 105. Most of my relatives lived well into their 90s.
The reality is that the current lifestyle recommendations have not produced good results. Americans are eating low fat, high carb, heart "healthy" diets for the most part over the last 20-30 years and what do we have? Increasing incidences of heart disease and cancer and an obesity-diabetes epidemic.
In the 19th century, people ate mostly animal fats and a lot of them (which are about 55% monounsaturated fat), organic produce and animals because that was all there was, and mostly whole unprocessed foods. The incidence of diabetes was nearly null, heart disease and cancer rarely ever happened. They died of fatal accidents, infectious disease, and childbirth. They did get a lot more exercise than the avg. American today and incidence of obesity hovered around 10% or less.
So why do I not believe in the current "healthy" recommendations?
There is also little to support the notion that longevity will continue to rise given the above facts. But lots of evidence that we have taken a seriously wrong turn.
I like to think I'm ageing well. I can still run, go up and down ladders all day and do construction work. I don't take any medications. I don't feel any different.
Who knows what the future will bring but if ageing badly is what happens, I hope I just kick the bucket!
If a person can't or won't take responsibility for being a miserable failure then they have to blame someone else. In this case it's the Boomers. If the Boomers didn't exist it would be the current president, or NASA, or the banker, or...
Seem off target? It's about as relevant as all the garbage spewed all over these boards by the OP.
"Contrary to their healthy living image, baby boomers are “drifting” into old age with poor eating habits, too little exercise and decimated savings, said Robert Butler, CEO of the International Longevity Center (ILC). "

Somebody's got serious mommy and daddy issues here.
So if you have a serious mommy or daddy issue how do you handle it on the cheap?
I know become a retirement forum naysayer. What ever happened to online relationships and meetings with found on the net older men at the mall? I guess this is safer and we should be tolerant of as they are safer in this format.
