I work in one of these facilities, and the more I work there, the more I look forward to ending my days there.
I'll be one of these patients, so blissfully happy with every kind of pain medication available to me, it will be like one long drugfest before I leave, and someone will have to remind me everyday of where I am: Planet Earth or Planet Neptune.
And the passage into the next world I won't even notice, the difference being so marginal.
And I've learned how to get the most medication from taking care of these people.
Scream, disrupt everyone on the hall, manipulate, make life a living hell for the Nurses until they give me what I want: total intoxication and numbness.
Living homeless at the age of 60 or so, after my parents are gone, is nitemare. I will find a way to excape this nightmare. I will not live in a nursing home or on the street when I'm that old. Rather die!!! God dam this country and all that ever were trusted to run it.
Why would you be homeless or living in a nursing home at age 60? At 60 you should have been responsible for your own living arrangements long ago, and actually should still be working or at least doing something productive. Most 60 year olds lead active lifestyles and the majority do not live in nursing homes at that age.
So at age 30, you don't like nursing homes or living on the streets, and are angry at all ever trusted to run the country. YOU are part of the team that runs it.We all are. Instead of complaining how bad things are, go and do something about it--VOLUNTEER at a nursing home or homeless sheltler and make someone's life a little better. In the process, you'll make your life better too.

What an extremely pessimistic view of your future. Create your own reality. If this is not how you want to end up, get busy now.
Now you all have me thinking about the idea of a nursing home co-op where volunteers can earn credits for working at the facility and when they need to be taken care of their credits will cover or reduce the cost of the care. We all have to think about our futures even that far ahead. Oh it's most likely just another one of my dumb ideas or if it isn't dumb someone is already doing it.
I do wish the best for the OP and I see a lot of folks who also don't seem to see their future being very bright. My mother raised me to believe I could do anything or be any kind of person I wanted to be if I tried hard enough and when I start to feel sorry for myself to just think about all the people who are far worse off than me.
And might I add that when people claim that the "USA is the best country in the world" then the politicians think that they don't really have to do much since the Americans are so lucky just to live in the US. There are millions of Americans who are suffering greatly from this recession and who have lost their health care insurance and are unable to afford basic medical care simply because they are unable to get employment. To say that the "USA is the best country in the world" is an insult to these Americans, many of whom are hard working individuals, who are suffering because they cannot afford the healthcare.
i watched a program about people living somewhere in the South who were waiting in line for hours to see doctors who donated some of their time to treat those who cannot afford to pay to see a doctor. One young girl needed serious medical care - these doctors could not give her the treatment she needed and she did not have the money to get the care she required so she had to do without it. She is one of thousands who are suffering in this way.
A country that allows their citizens to suffer like this cannot possibly be the "best country in the world". And shame on all the Americans who have allowed this situation to happen.
Yeah, the UK is such a paradise! You'll all be praying to Allah within the next ten years at the rate Islam is taking over your country.

Let's see, at 58 I am retired, have a nice place in the Colorado Rockies. I am healthy, and having the time of my life. The best part is NO ONE tells me what to do, when to get up, where to go, no stupid supervisor belittling me or ordering me around. I hike, fish, pan for gold, read, am learning Spanish, learning Morse code, I've gotten my Amateur Radio license (something I wanted since college but never had time). I see these worker bees struggle to get out in snow and zero degree weather as I am warm drinking my coffee.
These are absolutely the best times of my life and at 58, I am looking forward to the next 30-40 years. Looking forward to the adventure.

The person you are responding to didn't make any such claims. She was pointing out the fact that what someone characterized as the "best" country in the world has millions who are not insured and cannot afford medical treatment. And, to her this seemed to make a mockery of the claim "the best."
The whole idea of "the best country" depends very much on what one wants out of life for oneself and one's fellow citizens.
Perhaps for the U.S. to remain the #1 economic power in the world - if that is part of what "the best" might mean - then we leave millions uninsured and let 'em rot, and we stop sending barely competent teenagers to college and let them get down on their hands and knees and pull onions and cut celery - which will solve the immigration "problem" which bothers so many folks, and then we outlaw unions so that employers can pay working class folks whatever they feel like and with no benefits, and that way U.S. products will be dirt cheap and competitive around the world.
And if the measurement of "the best" is economic ranking in the world, then we will remain #1 for a long time. And as long as you aren't one of the mass of working class grunts everything will be fine - "the best," one might say.
