A close family member was recently diagnosed with macular degeneration (wet). This came as a surprise, and I feel helpless because so far I haven't been able to assist in any way. I've been on the internet and telephone looking for resources - support groups, daily newspapers in audible form, etc. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Support groups or other resource organizations haven't responded yet to my phone calls or e-mails.
Thank you.

The first thing to do is make sure this person is getting enough vitamins/minerals. Especially vitamin A. Macular degeneration is common in older folks. I know some medications recently hit the market to prevent the progress of the disease.

All docs are not created equal. Find one who is up on MD and very knowledgeable.

My mother-in-law has the wet macular degeneration problem, but has had great results from a series of needles to her eye. The shots are about a month or so apart, and she has had a series of four needles. At first, they didn't seem to work, but over time her vision has somewhat cleared up.

Well my mother in Law had it for years;wet. She had it checked by specialist . The good new was it wouldn't get nany worse the bad was nothing could be done time.He/she needs to see a apecailsit in using what vision he/she has also. When it first starts a specialist stops further loss of vision by treating with a lazer. The specailist said there is hopr for the future by implanting a chip but its still years off but looks very promising.

I have a friend who gets monthly shots in her eyes and she hasn't lost her vision yet. My father is blind from it because he got it before they started doing the shots and he got the laser treatments.
