The biggest thing is get a training course with your pistol of choice. We can give you all the information on guns that you want, but my suggestion is to go to a store that has MANY different types of pistols and handle them all and pick out the one that feels right in your hand.

I would suggest a .38 revolver that shoots +p. These do not have much recoil but has enough power. You can also start off with wad-cutter ammo to train with at the range. then move up to the +p ammo.

Again, what ever you do get training with your weapon that you buy.

For the shotgun folks, my shotgun is always loaded. I also have my pistol loaded....which ever one is closer....would be the one I use, if the time has come to that....

Don't bring wasp spray to a gunfight.

A .38 revolver is a good choice. Don't know whether the +P is necessary. I suppose it isn't a bad idea if the gun is happy with it.

As others have said you need training to understand your rights and if you have the mindset to not be a victim. Its alot more than just having a gun. when you go for training try use a .22 revolver to train with for starters. find out how much strengh you need to pull the trigger on double action only. work up from the .22 to a .38, its a good caliber, try a semi-auto in .380 or 9mm if possible. a laser sight might help after you know how to sight down the gun. do not try shoot more than 20-30 rounds till you know how your hands will be the next day. Its your right to own a gun, its your duty to know how to use it correctly.

I highly recomend the Ruger LCP. The .380 is a reasonable cartridge and the ergonomics of the little pistol are superb. It is easy to use and easy on the hand. You won't be disappointed. Carry with one round in the chamber and it's double action just like a revolver. Just pull the trigger.

i like the hammerless jobs from s&w like the 640. main reason is total concealability and for a citizen thats important.

i remember a few years ago in the middle of the night someone was banging on our door. i kept asking who it was but i couldnt understand them. i had put my robe on, slipped the 640 in the pocket and opened the door.

where we lived it was like townhouses and all the homes looked alike ,they had right home but wrong block. they didnt speak english .

they had no clue all the while i had the 640 in my pocket and if i had to i could fire as many times as needed right from the pocket.

noooo semi auto can do that without jamming. the revolver is great for those kinds of typical home situations.

pull a gun where it is not warranted and get ready to risk charges of brandishing a weapon.

I recommend the Bersa .380. It is a ripoff of a Beretta. It only costs about $230 brand new. It is very dependable and reliable. Also, it is cheap. Because let's be honest, a concealed carry gun is going to get dinged up and thrown around. I personally wouldn't want my $600 handgun getting all scuffed up and such from use.

Good points. The Ruger LCP is around the same price and is polymer.

I'm not sure I would recommend an semi-auto for someone who has not owned a gun before...for self defence purposes anyway...

When it comes to "that time" are you sure there is a round chambered?

A revolver is always loaded....pull the trigger and it shoots...an automatic not always the case...Unless you are a trained and very familiar with that pistol....If you had a semi-auto that had the little flag that pops up when you have one in the chamber, then maybe...but now your talking $$$for that type of pistol...

I know the Bersa and some smaller pistols are great and very concealiable, Something like that I could recommend the Makorov 9x18 cheaper than the Bersa and very likable....and the ammo is everywhere unlike the .380...
