My fiance and I are strongly considering moving to either Scituate, Exeter, or Coventry. Can anyone tell me which has the best schools, best downtown, best (newest) neighborhoods that are safe for kids to play in, and preferably a town that has at least one 24-hr store or gas station? Are these things even in existence?

Take a look at this site...under "About Rhode Island" You'll find school information and also look at house prices. All 3 towns are safe and have new housing. As far as a downtown, I don't think any one of them can claim a "downtown". There are villages. And yes, we have 24 hour stores and gas stations, even in Rhode Island. The 3 towns are fairly rural for RI, with the exception of the East end of Coventry...which is pretty well developed. That's your best bet if you're looking for 24 hour stores and gas stations.
Coventry doesn't have much of a downtown, but adjacent West Warwick does (Arctic). It's limited to a few drug stores, the DMV and a few bars though. Scituate has the village of Hope, not really much of a downtown either. Exeter is very rural. Coventry has plenty of 24 hr gas stations, and now has a 24-hour Super Walmart in a gargantuan shopping plaza on New London Tnpk. I've never heard any complaints about schools in either of those towns.
Coventry has a 24 hour pharmacy and at least one 24 hour convenience store (Cumberland Farms), at the east end of town.....western Coventry is still, thankfully, rural and (for Rhode Island) far away from stuff.
There's a super duper Wal-Mart, too. Most of Coventry is closer to the interstate, so therefore closer timewise to other places, usually places where we work.
You'll find the neightborhoods a bit different from what you MAY used to. There aren't a lot of plattes going up.
In Coventry Wood Estates is nice, lots of families, kids, and sidewalks as well as lake access (well, pond, but it's really big). Hunters Crossing is nice, too, I know a few people who live there and like it very much.
I lived in Coventry for many years. I liked the town. School system was good (not necessarily the best in the state, but still good). I thought the elementary schools were excellent.
Housing prices are coming down (like everywhere) so there probably are good deals if you look around. My oldest son just bought a cape for $170K that would have sold for about $280K a few years ago.
Taxes are high but really, they're high all over the state.
Coventry ain't swingin',and does have a rather high tax rate for Rhoddy Island, but its nice and VERY safe, also look at Summerfield Estates, very private cul de sac community, only a few houses there come up for sale, but well worth a look,as far as hunters crossing, sorry CoventryDude, its NOT charming!
Funny thing is I was going to mention that Hunter Crossing is not what I'd be looking for.
It's okay, but like a lot of new developments it kind of looks chinzy because the developer cut down just about every tree and the houses have those fake chimneys and no windows on the sides of the house.
I live in Hopkinton (about 30 minutes from Coventry, etc) and there are plenty of places to shop in all of these areas. Coventry actually has just recently built a Wal-Mart right off the main highway which is 24 hours and there are many places encircling it (Quiznos, Game Stop, BJ's Wholesale, etc) as well. There are many nice neighborhoods around there, too. My boyfriends parents own a house in a wonderful neighborhood in Coventry and it's quiet and very safe
