Given that the traffic NB into Boston/Newton is MUCH worse than SB into Providence/Warwick, I would try to live closer to Boston. Pawtucket is not a desirable area, and you will get killed with auto taxes and insurance. Attleboro or North Attleborough would be better choices. If you can cough up a few extra $$ to live in Foxborough, Mansfield, etc. that would be even better.

Newton's Planning Director lives in Pawtucket.

Getting into Newton for 7:00 a.m. won't be too bad; it will be about an hour ride from Pawtucket. Going south at 4:00 will typically be an hour and a half. Traffic opens up south of 495, so moving to Mansfield, Foxborough, or the Attleboros would only shave 10-15 minutes off the commute (and the only part of the commute that isn't soul crushing traffic).

Unfortunately, there are no good public transit options into Newton from the south without going into and out of Boston. To get to Auburndale by 7:00 you would have to be on the train out of Providence at 5:00 (or South Attleboro at 5:09).

The obvious point is the Newton planning director is someone who commutes daily between Pawtucket & Newton. Since the position is likely a 5 day, 9-5 something commute, that he/she does it, is probably valuable information. It is an unusual commuting axis.

And I had a coworker who commuted daily from West Greenwich to Boston. Would I do it myself? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

The other obvious point is that people who have been to Pawtucket still choose to live there.

What if you had a spouse who was commuting to New London?

Here's another difference: one is known as the Garden City and the other as The Dying Mill City. Bonus points if you can differentiate the two.

I missed that point. Anybody who knows Pawtucket knows there are several fine neighborhoods of the city in which to live. Oak Hill & Countryside are amongst the finest areas of the state. Quality Hill & Darlington come to mind if the budget requires.
