I'd be moving from the suburbs just outside of Philadelphia (and working in Northern New Jersey). I have family friends from Tennessee and "Yankee-friendly" never seemed to be an issue for me, but just wanted to put it out there to see what people had to say.

BTW, thanks everyone for the help so far. I definitely have a much better idea about the area than I did before asking the question.

I've lived in Henrico County and Glen Allen most of my life. Personally I prefer it over Midlothian or Mechanicsville but that's because that's my experience. Glen Allen HS is brand new. There are a ton of new subdivisions being built daily and plenty of great schools. I like Glen Allen and Short Pump. Both pricier than Midlothian or Mechanicsville but I think you get more out of it. My choices would be Short Pump or Glen Allen>Mechanicsville>Midlothian.

west end. We live in Wyndham. Right near Short Pump. Have many friends from NJ, NY & Philly here in my neighborhood. Amazing but not alot of basements. Try Grey Oaks too. Very Yankee Friendly area. We moved from NYC suburbs

Yankee friendly is relative. It depends on your attitude not where you're from. That said I'd suggest Midlothian, Short Pump/Glen Allen, or Mechanicsville

Being a yankee is not an issue in my experience in Richmond. No one cares. I suppose if you are a jerk, that might be a label people reach for, but I've literally not heard the word used in the several years I've been here. And I'm from Boston.

I put in my recommendation for Midlothian as well (western side) - we moved to Midlo a little over a year ago. Great shopping as you are centrally located to Short Pump and Stoney Point. Then for everyday shopping you are right at Chesterfield Towne Center area.

For houses in the 400k range take a look at areas around Charter Colony, Groves, etc. At top of your budget would be very family friendly areas on Robious Rd. (such as Tarrington etc.). I personally am not a fan of the Hull Street Rd. side of Midlothian due to traffic and being further away from the prime shopping area.

Schools around Midlothian Turnpike/Robious Road are very good!
