I will be arriving in Pulaski VA on Feb 15 for a year's service as an AmeriCorps VISTA working with a non-profit. I will need an affordable rental for myself and my springer. We are very quiet, no bad or loud habits. I need something very simple, small, inexpensive but insulated and safe. A VISTA position pays only 105% of the poverty level, so inexpensive is important. This is a year of service.... Can anyone help? Thanks! Karen

ooooopps............! I just read that Pulaski is a 'pill-popping town' because there's nothing for the young people to do. Is it safe there? I don't want to rely on statistics. I'd rather have first-hand info.

If there are better, safer, and still affordable places around where i could find something very small to rent, I'd drive up to 20 minutes.

I live nearby in Dublin, VA. I consider Pulaski a "sleepy" town, with average crime rates as compared to the rest of Virginia. There has not been a murder in Pulaski since 2002. Job opportunities are not great in Pulaski itself, but there is within 30 miles. There are lots of things to do in the surrounding area -- Claytor lake and the New River offer swimming, boating, floating, and fishing, Randolph Park is a great public pool, and the hiking is excellent in the mountains. Rental rates and cost of living are low compared to the surrounding area. I like Pulaski. If you need help finding a rental contact me with a private message.

Well, i live in Pulaski and would not recommend it. Yes, there are a lot of druggies around here. It's a dead-end town with nothing to offer. I would look around Radford. There's a little more there and it's 20 minutes from Pulaski. I tried to find something somewhere else, but couldn't, so i settled for Pulaski. Big mistake! I didn't know anything about it at the time. I won't be here long!
