Hi,
I'm moving to Rochester in August to work at the university of Rochester. I'm coming from the midwest and am extremely unfamiliar with the area. Basically I need advice on places to live. I would like to be close to the university. I would be willing to live in Rochester or a suburb if it is close. My main concern is safety and crime. I need to live somewhere where I can walk my dog at night and still feel safe. And I don't want to worry about my car getting broken into, or feel uneasy at home alone. I've been searching for places on craigslist, but because I don't know where to look exactly it's been difficult. Please post any advice on actual apartments, areas, rental websites, anything helps. I have a budget around $600 and could probably do a one bedroom or studio.

thanks!

Does anyone know anything about this area also?
51 Alliance Avenue, I think the listing said it was in South Wedge.

thank you for the helpful information! There's not much more I'm considering. I would like to live in the city walking distance to shops, bars, restaurants, etc., but like I said before I have to consider safety first.

I'd say that Park Ave. is the best bet.

zebang, not sure whether you have already come across this in your research, but it may help when you have a few addresses in mind. Good luck with your move!

Given your budget, you may want to consider the North Winton area on the east side of the city. You should be able to find a nice one bedroom in that area for $500 to $600 plus utilities. In Park Ave, you will most likely be renting a small studio in that price range, or sharing a larger apartment with other folks. As for North Winton, I recommend you stay east of Culver Road, on the streets closest to Merchants and Winton. There are some nice shops and a lot of conveniences along Winton - it's not Park Ave, but it should do the trick for you. The South Wedge is a gentrifying area. There are some great streets and a few that are sketchy. The area is fun and funky but very urban - perhaps not the best bet for someone who places safety above all else.

Another thought - don't overlook Brighton. There are a lot of apartment complexes near and along Elmwood and South Clinton, though my sense is that $600 may be a little tight for that area.
