I'm just trying to figure out how seriously I should take this "energy report" I got from RG&E. It says "this month you spent $73 more on electricity than the average home in your area, and your natural gas use was also higher than average." Then it gives tips on how to save money on energy costs such as "scrape your dishes instead of rinsing them before loading the dishwasher."

Did everyone get this same letter claiming their energy use is higher than average or is this analysis of my energy use really personalized and accurate? It does say "we compare your home to similar homes in your area" and specifies that means homes 900-1500 sq ft built 1958-1968.

They (RG&E) do put this information in everybody's bill, I believe. I know that I get it every month, but it seems like a waste of paper......

I keep the AC at 70 all summer so maybe this report is really accurate on the electricity. No idea why my natural gas use would be higher than comparable homes this time of year.

I was kind of hoping the $73 amount is fake and everyone's report says their energy use is higher than average.

We have been getting those every month here in the Seattle area from our provider, PSE. Pay no attention to it, they have no idea how many people are in your home, what kinds of appliances/heating you have, or what temperatures you like to keep it at. The range they gave you, 900-1,500 sf is a huge difference that would account for such a cost difference.

This report I received was not included with the bill. It was a separate mailing. It's printed on both sides of the paper. It shows charts of my energy use over the past year, has several sections of tips for saving energy, and then there's a part about a discount on a thermostat and a "smart savings reward program."
